WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Holy Cross softball team traveled to Army for a Patriot League doubleheader on Sunday, Apr. 13. The Crusaders picked up their first conference win in game one 6-5 and dropped game two 6-0 to the Black Knights. Holy Cross took the first win over Army since 2022.
GAME ONE: CRUSADERS 6, BLACK KNIGHTS 5 (FINAL)
STARTING IN THE CIRCLE:
- Holy Cross: Avery Toddings, 1.0 innings pitched.
- Army: Breanna Izzo (L, 12-6), 3.1 innings pitched, four hits allowed, two runs, two earned, two strikeouts.
IN RELIEF:
- Holy Cross: Jordan Goedel (W, 2-10), 4.0 innings pitched, six hits allowed, five runs, four earned, three strikeouts.
- Holy Cross: Sophia Roncone, 2.0 innings pitched, five hits allowed.
- Army: Libby Levendoski, 0.1 innings pitched, two hits allowed, four runs, none earned.
- Army: Amanda Eaglin, 3.1 innings pitched, two hits allowed, two strikeouts.
STEPPING TO THE PLATE:
- Kate Trudgen: 3-for-3, two runs scored, one RBI.
- Callie Thibault: 2-for-4, one double, three RBIs.
- Ali Sniegocki: 1-for-4, one double, one run scored two RBIs.
- Ashton White: 2-for-4, one double, one run scored, one RBI.
- Taylor Brown: 3-for-4, one double, one RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- In the top of the third, senior captain Callie Thibault crushed an RBI double to left field driving in teammate Kate Trudgen for the 1-0 lead.
- A strong top of the fourth for the Crusaders started with a bases-loaded RBI single to left center field hit by Trudgen to score senior captain Jena Whipple. Junior captain Ali Sniegocki smacked a two-RBI double to right field to drive in Trudgen and senior captain Emma Fong for the 4-0 score. Thibault followed with a two-RBI single down the left line to score sophomore Ava Gambichler and Sniegocki to extend the lead to 6-0. In the bottom of the inning, Army's Ashton White drove in one run on an RBI double to left center.
- The Black Knights started to work their way into the Holy Cross lead in the bottom of the fifth with Sam Bocis scoring while Maaika Dones stole second. Annie Christina followed to score Dones on an RBI single for the 6-3 result.
- Army tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the sixth to make it a one-run game on two RBI singles.
- Holy Cross held on with Thibault making the play to Fong at home to catch the runner for the final out of the game. The Crusaders prevailed 6-5 over the Black Knights.
GAME TWO: CRUSADERS 0, BLACK KNIGHTS 6 (FINAL)
STARTING IN THE CIRCLE:
- Holy Cross: Sophia Roncone (L, 3-14), 4.0 innings pitched, eight hits allowed, five runs, three earned.
- Army: Katelyn Flanders (W, 6-3), 7.0 innings pitched, two hits allowed, six strikeouts.
IN RELIEF:
- Holy Cross: Avery Toddings, 2.0 innings pitched, two hits allowed, one run, one earned.
STEPPING TO THE PLATE:
- Anna Brait: 2-for-3, one double.
- Ashton White: 3-for-4, one run scored, two RBIs.
- Taylor Brown: 1-for-4, one double, one run scored, one RBI.
- Tayten Moore: 1-for-3, one run scored, one RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Army got on the board first with Maisi Sigler reaching first on an error and White scoring on the play for the 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first.
- The Black Knights extended their lead in the bottom of the second on a Tayten Moore RBI bunt, a Taylor Brown RBI ground out and a White RBI single up the middle for the 4-0 result.
- White tacked on another run in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI double to left field.
- Leila Hurst scored Bocis on the RBI ground out in the bottom of the fifth for the 6-0 advantage.
- Army took game two 6-0 over Holy Cross.
UP NEXT:
- The Crusaders return to action on Monday, Apr. 14 for the final game of the series with Army at the Army West Point Softball Complex in West Point, N.Y.
- First pitch is scheduled for 11:00 a.m.
