Baseball rallies late again for win against Army

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Holy Cross baseball team scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to earn a 4-3 seven inning game one comeback win against Patriot League foe Army West Point Sunday afternoon on Fitton Field. Holy Cross fell by a 6-0 score in game two.

The doubleheader split sends the Crusaders to 15-18, 7-5 PL while the Black Knights move to 13-17, 8-7 PL.

During game one, Holy Cross struck out for the second out of the inning after a throw down to first base. Junior CJ Egrie took off for home on the throw down to first and slid in safe head first to home plate to tie the game. Two pitches later, sophomore John LaFleur singled home the game winning run. Junior Jaden Wywoda tossed his second consecutive complete game matching a career-high with eight punchouts earning his fifth win of the season.

GAME ONE: HOLY CROSS 4, ARMY 3 (7 INN.)

STARTING ON THE MOUND:
  • Junior Jaden Wywoda: (W, 5-1), complete game, six hits allowed, three runs – one earned, walk, eight strikeouts.
  • Bryce Brownlee: (ND), 4.1 innings pitched, four hits allowed, two runs – one earned, five walks, four strikeouts.
OUT OF THE BULLPEN:
  • Robbie Penswick: (L, 0-3), 1.0 innings pitched, two earned runs, two walks, two strikeouts.
STEPPING TO THE PLATE:
  • CJ Egrie: 2-for-3, double, run scored, walk, stolen base.
  • Senior Jimmy King: 2-for-4, two doubles, run scored.
  • John LaFleur: 1-for-3, RBI, walk.
  • Freshman Nick Spaner: 1-for-3, RBI.
  • William Parker: 2-for-3, two RBI, stolen base.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • An RBI single through the left side scored a runner from second with a close play at the plate pushed Army ahead 1-0.
  • King led off the fourth with his second two-bagger of the game. He scored from second with two outs when Spaner legged out an infield single to level the game 1-1.
  • Army scored twice in the fifth to jump back ahead 3-1.
  • Three walks in the home half of the fifth loaded the bases. With two outs, sophomore Alex Sandell worked a full count free pass to trim the deficit to one, 3-2.
  • Holy Cross rallied in the sixth inning to complete the win.

GAME TWO: ARMY 6, HOLY CROSS 0

STARTING ON THE MOUND:
  • Joe Valchar: (W, 2-0), 8.0 innings pitched, four hits allowed, zero runs allowed, two walks, seven strikeouts.
  • Freshman Derek Volz: (L, 2-1), 3.2 innings pitched, three hits allowed, two runs – one earned, four walks, five strikeouts.
OUT OF THE BULLPEN:
  • Freshman Pedro Leon: 4.1 innings pitched, five hits allowed, two earned runs, two walks, five strikeouts.
  • Trey Ates: 1.0 innings pitched, zero hits allowed, zero earned runs, strikeout.
STEPPING TO THE PLATE:
  • Chris Barr: 2-for-4, RBI, run scored, two walks, stolen base
  • Coleson Titus: 2-for-5, double, two runs scored, stolen base.
  • Sophomore Gianni Royer: 2-for-3.
  • Senior Sean Scanlon: 1-for-4, double.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • A Scanlon double with a senior Chris Baillargeon walk and Royer single loaded the bases with one down in the first. Army stranded the runners without allowing a run.
  • A bases loaded walk broke the scoring giving the Black Knights a 1-0 edge in the second.
  • A Crusader fielding miscue allowed another run to score bumping the lead to 2-0 for Army.
  • Two more runs in the fifth and eighth for Army expanded the margin to 6-0.
  • Army loaded the bases in the top of the ninth with no outs. Leon struck out a batter looking, got an infield fly to shortstop and another strikeout looking to strand the bases loaded.
  • Holy Cross put two runners on base in the bottom of the ninth, but could not cash in.
DUE UP:
  • Holy Cross hits the road on Tuesday, April 8 for a mid-week nonconference bout with Stonehill (8-19).
  • First pitch is slated for 3 p.m.
