WORCESTER, Mass. – The Holy Cross softball team hosted Rhode Island (URI) for a non-conference mid-week doubleheader and Cousy Cup game on Thursday, Apr. 24. The Crusaders dropped game one 3-2 (10 innings) to the Rams 3-2 but rallied to shutout URI 2-0 in game two.
GAME ONE: CRUSADERS 2, RAMS 3 (FINAL)
STARTING IN THE CIRCLE:
- Holy Cross: Jordan Goedel (L, 2-14), 10.0 innings pitched, 10 hits allowed, three runs, two earned, six strikeouts.
- URI: Avery Vale-Cruz (W, 4-4), 10.0 innings pitched, four hits allowed, two runs, one earned, five strikeouts.
STEPPING TO THE PLATE:
- Ava Gambichler: 1-for-2, one double, one run scored.
- Emma Pietrzak: 2-for-4, one RBI.
- Ali Sniegocki: 1-for-4, one RBI.
- Katie Knarr: 3-for-4, one double, one run scored, one RBI.
- Hannah Hernandez: 2-for-4, one run scored.
- Sydney Orndorff: 3-for-4.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- After a scoreless four innings, URI scored on a Katie Knarr RBI double to right center field, followed by Ella Morris scoring on a fielding error for the 2-0 lead in the top of the fifth. The Crusaders answered back in the bottom of the inning with a junior captain Ali Sniegocki RBI single to score teammate Ava Gambichler.
- Holy Cross tied the game in the bottom of the sixth on a sophomore Emma Pietrzak RBI single to bring in teammate Caroline Higgins.
- After two scoreless extra innings, the Rams broke through with a Julianne Torres RBI double to left center field in the top of the 10th inning. The Crusaders came up short in the bottom of the inning to drop game one 3-2.
GAME TWO: CRUSADERS 2, RAMS 0 (FINAL)
STARTING IN THE CIRCLE:
- Holy Cross: Sophia Roncone (W, 4-15), 7.0 innings pitched, two hits allowed, six strikeouts.
- URI: Brooke Gerry (L, 1-3), 6.1 innings pitched, four hits allowed, two runs, two earned, six strikeouts.
STEPPING TO THE PLATE:
- Maya Gallagher: 1-for-3, one home run, one run scored, two RBIs.
- Jenna Whipple: 1-for-3, one run scored.
- Emily Power: 1-for-3.
- Hannah Hernandez: 1-for-2.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- After a scoreless 6 innings, junior pitcher Sophia Roncone picked up two strikeouts in the top of the seventh, two of her six on the game, to keep the Rams off the board.
- In the bottom of the seventh, senior captain Jena Whipple singled to center field to occupy first base. Sophomore Maya Gallagher stepped up to the plate and crushed a two-run walk-off homer to left field to give the Crusaders the 2-0 victory. This hit marked Gallagher's first career home run and Roncone earned her first shutout win of the season.

- The Crusaders return to action on Saturday, Apr. 5 for a Patriot League doubleheader at Colgate in Hamilton, N.Y. at Eaton Street Softball Complex
- First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. and 2:30 p.m.
