Baseball suffers nonconference loss to Dartmouth on Tuesday

WORCESTER, Mass – The Holy Cross baseball team was upended 9-4 by nonconference opponent Dartmouth Tuesday evening on Fitton Field.

The loss evens the Crusaders record at 21-21 on the year while the Big Green improve to 8-21. Dartmouth broke a six game losing streak versus Holy Cross picking up their first win since April 6, 2016.

Sophomore center fielder Gianni Royer tallied two extra base hits, his third home run and 14th double of the season. Classmate John LaFleur's team season-best 11 game hitting was snapped in the contest.

STARTING ON THE MOUND:
  • Andrew Lombana: (ND), 3.1 innings pitched, three hits allowed, three earned runs, two walks, one strikeout.
  • Freshman Pedro Leon: (ND), 3.0 innings pitched, three hits allowed, two earned runs, one walk, five strikeouts.
OUT OF THE BULLPEN:
  • Trey Sejnoha: (W, 1-1), 2.1 innings pitched, three hits allowed, one earned run, one walk, one strikeout.
  • Sophomore Colin Dowdle: (L, 0-1), 1.0 innings pitched, three hits allowed, three earned runs, two walks, zero strikeouts.
  • Jeff Lee: (S, 1), 3.0 innings pitched, two hits allowed, zero earned runs, two walks, two strikeouts.
STEPPING TO THE PLATE:
  • Camden Rush: 2-for-5, five RBI.
  • Taer Rodriguez: 2-for-2, double, RBI, three runs scored, three walks.
  • Gianni Royer: 2-for-5, double, home run, RBI, run scored.
  • Senior Chris Baillargeon: 2-for-5, two RBI, stolen base.
  • Sophomore Colin Brown: 2-for-2, run scored.
  • Senior Jimmy King: 1-for-4, run scored, stolen base.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Holy Cross scored first in the bottom of the second as King took home on a caught stealing to make it 1-0.
  • A flared two RBI single in the top of the third pushed the Big Green ahead 2-1.
  • With two outs, Baillargeon roped the first pitch to the opposite field to bring in a pair to move the hosts back ahead 3-2.
  • Dartmouth leveled the score 3-3 with no outs in the fifth. They loaded the bases with no outs and only could plate two more runs to lead 5-3.
  • Four runs in the sixth for the guests expanded the edge to 9-3.
  • Royer launched a no doubter over everything in left to trim the margin to 9-4.
  • The Crusaders loaded the bases in the eighth with one down, but could not cash home any runners. 
DUE UP:
  • Holy Cross continues their homestand with a three game series versus Patriot League foe Lafayette (12-29, 8-11 PL) beginning on Friday, April 25.
  • First pitch is set for 5 p.m.
