Crusaders shut out by Lehigh in Saturday doubleheader

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Holy Cross softball team hosted Lehigh for a Patriot League doubleheader on Saturday, Apr. 19. The Crusaders were shut out by the Mountain Hawks, 1-0 in game one and 5-0 in game two.

GAME ONE: CRUSADERS 0, MOUNTAIN HAWKS 1 (FINAL)

STARTING IN THE CIRCLE:

  • Holy Cross: Jordan Goedel (L, 2-12), 7.0 innings pitched, seven hits allowed, one run, none earned, one strikeout.
  • Lehigh: Madison Finnerty (W, 10-6), 7.0 innings pitched, four hits allowed, nine strikeouts.

STEPPING TO THE PLATE:

  • Ali Sniegocki: 1-for-3, one double.
  • Anna Brait: 2-for-3.
  • Peyton Sward: 2-for-3.
  • Rory Dudley: 2-for-3.
  • Kelly Fricker: 2-for-3.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • After five scoreless innings, the Mountain Hawks scored on an overthrow from the outfield for the 1-0 lead in the top of the sixth.
  • A strong defensive battle led to Lehigh taking game one 1-0 over the Crusaders.


GAME TWO: CRUSADERS 0, MOUNTAIN HAWKS 5 (FINAL)

STARTING IN THE CIRCLE:

  • Holy Cross: Sophia Roncone (L, 3-15), 7.0 innings pitched, eight hits allowed, five runs, five earned, four strikeouts.
  • Lehigh: Chloe Hess (W, 9-8), 7.0 innings pitched, five hits allowed, three strikeouts.

STEPPING TO THE PLATE:

  • Kate Trudgen: 1-for-3.
  • Sydney Parlett: 2-for-3, one double, two RBIs.
  • Kelly Fricker: 2-for-4, one double, one run scored.
  • Julia Mrochko: 1-for-3, one double, one run scored.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Lehigh scored three runs in the top of the first on a fielder's choice RBI bunt from Maddy Schmeiser, a Julia Mrochko stolen home plate and a Sydney Parlett RBI single to center field.
  • The Mountain Hawks tacked on two more runs on a Parlett RBI double to center field and a Helen Woloshyn RBI single to the pitcher for the 5-0 lead in the top of the sixth.
  • Lehigh took game two 5-0 over the Crusaders. Junior pitcher Sophia Roncone threw her 300th career strikeout in the contest.

UP NEXT: 

  • The Crusaders return to action on Sunday, Apr. 20 for the final game of the series with Lehigh at the Freshman Field in Worcester, Mass. 
  • First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
