Egrie leads baseball to pivotal Patriot League win at Army

WEST POINT, N.Y. – Junior right fielder CJ Egrie was 3-for-5 with a pair of home runs as the Holy Cross baseball team earned a pivotal 12-6 Patriot League victory at Army West Point Wednesday evening.

The win evens the Crusaders overall record at 19-19 and puts them at 10-6 in the conference. The Black Knights falls to 16-19, 10-9 PL. Holy Cross took the season series from Army for the first time since 2019.

The Crusader leadoff hitter posted his second two homer game of the season. He drove in four with three runs scored and a stolen base. Egrie paces the Patriot League in runs scored (44) and stolen bases (26).

Freshman catcher Nick Spaner also had a big game. He belted his first career home run in the seventh inning, a three run shot in a 3-for-4 effort. It was the first three hit showing of his career. Senior Chris Baillargeon was 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI as well. As a team, Holy Cross had eight extra base hits in the game.

STARTING ON THE MOUND:
  • Sophomore Thomas Skrobe: (W, 1-0), 3.0 innings pitched, two hits allowed, one earned run, zero walks, two strikeouts.
  • Joe Valchar: (L, 2-0), 2.1 innings pitched, four hits allowed, three earned runs, four walks, five strikeouts.
OUT OF THE BULLPEN:
  • Freshman Marco Citro: (S, 2) 3.0 innings pitched, five hits allowed, two earned runs, one walk, four strikeouts.
  • Kevin Reavey: 1.0 innings pitched, one hit allowed, three earned runs, one walk, three strikeouts.
STEPPING TO THE PLATE:
  • CJ Egrie: 3-for-5, two home runs, four RBI, three runs scored, stolen base.
  • Nick Spaner: 3-for-4, home run, three RBI, three runs scored, walk.
  • Chris Baillargeon: 2-for-4, two RBI.
  • Sophomore Gianni Royer: 1-for-3, double, RBI, two runs scored, two walks.
  • William Parker: 2-for-5, double, RBI, run scored.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • A wild pitch scored the first run of the game for Army in the bottom of the second.
  • Holy Cross scored three runs in the top of the third. Baillargeon drove home the first run of the game. Senior Jimmy King narrowly missed a home run notching a double to give the Crusaders the lead 2-1. With two outs senior Brendan Jones drove the ball to the opposite field for a triple plating King to make it 3-1.
  • Baillargeon notched his second RBI of the game in the fourth via a sacrifice fly to right making it 4-1 Holy Cross in the fourth. Royer pulled an RBI double with two down to lead 5-1.
  • Army came within one run 5-4 due to one run in the fourth and two in the fifth.
  • Egrie gave the Crusaders some breathing room in the sixth launching a two run homer for the 7-4 advantage.
  • On a 3-1 hitters count with two outs, Spaner delivered a big blow, a three-run homer to up the margin to 10-4.
  • Army trimmed the deficit down to four, 10-6 in the bottom of the seventh.
  • The Black Knights put two runners on base early in the eighth. Citro struck out the first batter of the frame then induced an inning ending double play to keep the Crusaders ahead.
  • Egrie demolished his second dinger of the game in the ninth.
POSTGAME THOUGHTS:

DUE UP:
  • Holy Cross remains on the road this weekend for a three game set at Navy (21-17, 12-7 PL) starting Saturday, April 19.
  • First pitch of the Patriot League doubleheader starts at 1 p.m.
