TOWSON, Md. – The Holy Cross baseball team attempted to rally from a one run deficit in the ninth inning but came up short dropping a 7-6 decision to nonconference opponent Towson Thursday afternoon at John B. Schuerholz Park
.
The loss sends the Crusaders to 5-6 while the host Tigers move to 4-8.
Junior
CJ Egrie continued his strong start to the campaign reaching base in his 11th straight game to start the season and 20th straight dating back to May 7, 2023 going 2-for-3 with a double and a pair of walks in the contest.
Sophomore
John LaFleur, who is slashing .444/.500/.778 on the spring break trip (five games), was 1-for-4 at the dish with a walk and a run scored.
STARTING ON THE MOUND:
- Junior Alexander Deutsch: L, (0-1), 1.2 innings pitched, two hits allowed, five earned runs, three walks.
- Vincent Salvo: ND, 3.1 innings pitched, one hit allowed, three earned runs, four walks, one strikeout.
OUT OF THE BULLPEN:
- Nate Nabholz: W, (1-0), 2.2 innings pitched, three hits allowed one run – zero earned, three walks.
- Matt Leikus: 2.0 innings pitched, three hits allowed, two runs – one earned, one strikeout.
- Brett Selis: S, (1) 1.0 innings pitched, one hit allowed, one walk.
- Freshman Marco Citro: 2.2 innings pitched, three hits allowed, two runs – one earned, two strikeouts.
- Sophomore Nick Harnisch: 3.2 innings pitched, one hit allowed, two walks, two strikeouts.
STEPPING TO THE PLATE:
- Taye Robinson: 2-for-4, home run, four RBI, run scored.
- Max D'Alessandro: 1-for-3, double, RBI, run scored.
- CJ Egrie: 2-for-3, double, two walks.
- Senior Chris Baillargeon: 2-for-5, run scored.
- Sophomore Gianni Royer: 1-for-4, two runs scored, two stolen bases, walk.
- Senior Sean Scanlon: 0-for-1, RBI, run scored, three walks.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Towson hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the first for the early edge.
- Two more runs came across in the home half of the second to lead 5-0.
- Three consecutive walks loaded the bases for the Crusaders in the top of the fourth. Another free pass brought home a run with one down. A fielder's choice RBI and a sophomore Ryan Grundy RBI single made it 5-3 in favor of the hosts. Egrie took a full count walk to reload the bases. A passed ball allowed another run to score in the fourth to trim the deficit to 5-4.
- A RBI groundout and single tacked on a pair for Towson in the fifth.
- Scanlon lofted a sacrifice fly in the seventh followed by a throwing error put the Crusaders down one, 7-6.
- In the ninth, a two out Royer single and stolen base moved the tying run to second. Scanlon worked a full count walk but the next batter was retired to end the contest.
DUE UP:
- Holy Cross continues their spring break trip on March 7 at VMI (10-1)
- First pitch is slated for 3 p.m. and the contest will stream live on ESPN+.
