Bats carry baseball to 13 inning win at Towson

TOWSON, Md. – Three players recorded three or more hits as the Holy Cross baseball team earned their third straight win, a 9-6 victory in 13 innings at nonconference opponent Towson.

The contest was suspended in the top of the 11, tied 5-5 on Saturday due to lack of daylight. It was resumed Monday, March 3 at noon before the final game of the series. The win levels the Crusaders' record at 4-4 in the early part of the campaign while the Tigers drop to 3-6.

Sophomore John LaFleur, senior Sean Scanlon and junior CJ Egrie combined to go 10-for-21 (.476) in the contest with four extra base hits, six RBI, four runs scored and a pair of stolen bases. It was LaFleur's first four hit game of his collegiate career.

With the game tied in the bottom of the 11th Egrie threw out a runner at the plate to keep the game level before the Crusaders scored four runs in the 13th to win it.

STARTING ON THE MOUND:
  • Senior Sean Scanlon: ND, 3.0 innings pitched, four hits allowed, three earned runs, two walks.
  • Andrew Luczak: ND, 3.2 innings pitched, six hits allowed, two earned runs, walk, six strikeouts.
OUT OF THE BULLPEN:
  • Freshman Derek Volz: 4.0 innings pitched, one hit allowed, unearned run, six strikeouts.
  • Senior Luke LeMond: 3.0 innings pitched, four hits allowed, earned run, four strikeouts.
  • Sophomore Nick Harnisch: W, (1-0), 3.0 innings pitched, five hits allowed, earned run, two walks.
  • Matt Lynch: 2.0 innings pitched, hit allowed, two earned runs, two walks.
  • Nate Nabholz: 2.1 innings pitched, four hits allowed, earned run, walk, three strikeouts.
  • Vincent Salvo: 0.1 innings pitched, one hit allowed, walk.
  • Kyle Emmons: 2.2 innings pitched: no hits allowed, no walks, no runs allowed, four strikeouts.
  • Brett Selis: L, (0-1), 1.1 innings pitched, four hits allowed, four earned runs, one strikeout.
  • Nick Karks: 0.2 innings pitched one hit allowed.
STEPPING TO THE PLATE:
  • John LaFleur: 4-for-7, triple, stolen base, two RBI
  • Sean Scanlon: 3-for-7, two doubles, home run, two RBI, run scored.
  • CJ Egrie: 3-for-7 two RBI, three runs scored, stolen base.
  • Sophomore Braden Connors: 2-for-5, two walks, RBI, run scored.
  • Max D'Alessandro: 2-for-3, home run, RBI, run scored, walk.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Holy Cross scored first as Egrie led off the contest with a bunt single and Scanlon belted a double to right field. Royer plated Egrie with an RBI groundout for the 1-0 lead.
  • A sacrifice fly RBI and a single to center put the hosts ahead 2-1 in the second.
  • Scanlon helped his own cause homering on a 0-2 pitch in the top of the third to tie the game.
  • Towson regained the lead 3-2 in the bottom of the third via a solo homer.
  • Some two out hitting for the Crusaders in the sixth, a two RBI single off the bat of Egrie and a double from Scanlon gave the Crusaders the lead 5-3.
  • Single runs by the Tigers in the sixth and eighth innings tied the game.
  • Towson attempted to walk off the game in the bottom of the 11th, but Egrie gunned down the runner at the plate to keep the game tied.
  • In the 13th, Egrie singled and stole second base. He advanced to third on a balk and Connors drove him on with a single through the right side. LaFleur opened up the ball game, singling plating a pair of runs as the Crusaders led 9-5.
