Crusaders defensive efforts fall short in home opening doubleheader against Siena

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Holy Cross softball team hosted Siena for its home opening doubleheader on Mar. 15. The Crusaders fell to the Saints 9-4 in game one and 3-1 in game two.

GAME ONE: CRUSADERS 4, SAINTS 9 (FINAL)

STARTING IN THE CIRCLE:

  • Holy Cross: Sophia Roncone (L, 2-6), 5.0 innings pitched, nine hits allowed, seven runs, seven earned, three strikeouts.
  • Siena: Alissa Eimont (W, 3-5), 7.0 innings pitched, seven hits allowed, four runs, four earned, two strikeouts.

IN RELIEF:

STEPPING TO THE PLATE:

  • Kate Trudgen: 2-for-3, one double, one RBI.
  • Anna Brait: 2-for-3, one run scored, two RBIs.
  • Mackenzie Swinson: 3-for-3, one home run, three runs scored, five RBIs.
  • Emma Peterson: 1-for-4, one double, two RBIs.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Crusaders got on the board first with freshman Kate Trudgen smacking an RBI double down the left line to score senior captain Emma Fong from second in the bottom of the second inning.
  • Siena battled back in the top of the third to tie the score 1-1 with a Lauren Melton RBI single to the left side.
  • In the top of the fourth, the Saints scored four on a Mackenzie Swinson grand slam over the left field wall.
  • Siena tacked on two more runs in the top of the sixth on an Ashley Giampolo RBI single and an Emma Peterson two RBI double for the 8-1 result. In the bottom of the inning, sophomore Emma Pietrzak drove home teammate Anna Brait on the sacrifice fly RBI.
  • In the top of the seventh, the Saints scored on a sacrifice RBI hit by Swinson. The Crusaders worked to battle back with Brait hitting a hard ball to the first baseman and driving in two runs on the play. Holy Cross fell 9-4 to Siena in game one.


GAME TWO: CRUSADERS 1, SAINTS 3 (FINAL)

STARTING IN THE CIRCLE:

  • Holy Cross: Jordan Goedel (L, 1-7), 7.0 innings pitched, four hits allowed, three runs, two earned, two strikeouts.
  • Siena: Kaycie Kennedy (W, 6-4), 7.0 innings pitched, three hits allowed, one run, one earned, four strikeouts.

STEPPING TO THE PLATE:

  • Ali Sniegocki: 1-for-2, one double, one run scored.
  • Emma Fong: 1-for-3, one RBI.
  • Gracie Goewey: 1-for-3, one home run, one run scored, three RBIs.
  • Chloe Cummings: 2-for-4, one run scored.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • With two on, Siena's Gracie Goewy cracked a three RBI homer over the left center wall for the 3-0 lead in the top of the first. In the bottom of the inning, Fong hit an RBI single through the left side to score teammate Ali Sniegocki for the 3-1 result.
  • A strong defensive effort from the Crusaders, in particular freshman pitcher Jordan Goedel and junior Morgan Kane in right field (five putouts), to keep the Saints off the board for the rest of the game.
  • Game two ended in a 3-1 final score in favor of Siena.

UP NEXT: 

  • The Crusaders return to action on Sunday, Mar. 16 for a doubleheader against Brown at Freshman Field in Worcester, Mass. 
  • First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. and 2:30 p.m.
