WORCESTER, Mass. – The Holy Cross softball team hosted Brown for a Sunday non-conference doubleheader on Mar. 16. The Crusaders fell in both games, 2-0 in game one and 5-4 in game two to the Bears.
GAME ONE: CRUSADERS 0, BEARS 2 (FINAL)
STARTING IN THE CIRCLE:
- Holy Cross: Avery Toddings (L, 0-1), 4.1 innings pitched, three hits allowed, two runs, two earned, one strikeout.
- Brown: Alexis Guevara (W, 5-2), 7.0 innings pitched, five hits allowed, four strikeouts.
IN RELIEF:
- Holy Cross: Sophia Roncone, 2.2 innings pitched, two hits allowed, one strikeout.
STEPPING TO THE PLATE:
- Kate Trudgen: 2-for-3.
- Cameron Zytkewicz Ray: 1-for-2, two RBIs.
- Laurel Moody: 3-for-3, one run scored.
- Kaicee Klus: 1-for-2, one run scored.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Bears drove in two runs to start the game on a Cameron Zytkewicz Ray blooper into shallow right field for the early lead.
- A strong effort from the Crusader bullpen, with sophomore Avery Toddings on the bump in her first career start and junior Sophia Roncone closing out the game, held off the Bears for the remainder of the competition. Brown took game one 2-0.
GAME TWO: CRUSADERS 4, BEARS 5 (FINAL)
STARTING IN THE CIRCLE:
- Holy Cross: Jordan Goedel (L, 1-8), 4.2 innings pitched, three hits allowed, three runs, two earned, one strikeout.
- Brown: Annie Finch (W, 6-0), 4.0 innings pitched, one strikeout.
IN RELIEF:
- Holy Cross: Sophia Roncone, 2.1 innings pitched, five hits allowed, two runs, one earned, two strikeouts.
- Brown: Macy Borowski, 2.0 innings pitched, four hits allowed, three runs, two earned, two strikeouts.
- Brown: Edie Cobb (1S), 1.0 innings pitched, one hit allowed, one run, one earned.
STEPPING TO THE PLATE:
- Anna Brait: 1-for-3, one double, one run scored, one RBI.
- Callie Thibault: 2-for-3, one run scored.
- Amanda Deng: 3-for-4, one triple, one double, one run scored, two RBIs.
- Abby Bettencourt: 2-for-3, one double, three runs scored.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- It wasn't until the top of the fourth that Brown got on board on an Abby Bettencourt stolen home plate and a Maya Choksi RBI ground out for the 2-0 lead.
- The Bears doubled their lead in the top of the fifth with Liv Kam scoring on a fielding error and Amanda Deng hitting an RBI single to center field. The Crusaders drove in a run with junior Anna Brait cracking an RBI double to left center to score senior captain Callie Thibault for the 4-1 result.
- In the bottom of the sixth, freshman Kate Trudgen hit an RBI ground out to the second baseman to drive in sophomore Emma Pietrzak and cut the Bears' lead in half.
- Brown scored one more run in the top of the seventh, with Deng hitting a deep double down the left field line for the 5-2 advantage. The Crusaders battled back with some small ball to load up the bases in the bottom of the inning. Junior captain Ali Sniegocki took home on a wild pitch to bring the Crusaders within two runs. With runners on the corners, Pietrzak knocked a sacrifice fly RBI into right field to score Brait, but the runner on first got caught at second, which ended the game with a close 5-4 score in favor of Brown.
UP NEXT:
- The Crusaders return to action on Saturday, Mar. 22 for a conference opening doubleheader at Lafayette in Easton, Pa. held at Metzgar Fields.
- First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. and 2:30 p.m.
