Men’s ice hockey defeats Army in overtime in game one of Atlantic Hockey semifinals

WORCESTER, Mass. – Holy Cross men's ice hockey team defeated Army, 3-2 in overtime, Friday night in front of a packed Hart Center Rink.

Holy Cross moves to 23-13-2 on the season with the win, while Army moves to 16-19-2 with the loss.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Freshman Matt Kursonis opened the scoring 1:49 into the first period, picking up a rebound off of a shot by senior John Gelatt, sending the backhand shot past the outstretched netminder for the score.
  • Army tied the game at 1-1 with just over six minutes to play in the opening period.
  • Junior Devin Phillips regained the lead for the Crusaders with 2:50 to play in the period, sending a one-timer into the back of the net off a pass from junior Matt DeBoer.
  • Army tied the game on the lone goal in the second period on a five-on-three opportunity.
  • The game remained tied through the third period – with the Black Knights outshooting the Crusaders, 14-9 – sending the game into overtime.
  • Phillips proved to be the hero 3:15 into the extra period to give the Crusaders the 1-0 lead in the series. Starting from behind the defensive net, sophomore Brody Gagno sent a long pass to sophomore Jack Stockfish at the offensive blue line. Carrying the puck into the zone, Stockfish dragged two defenders with him before sending a pass to an oncoming, unmarked Phillips for the one timer into the top corner of the net for the win.

BEYOND THE BOX:
  • Senior Thomas Gale recorded a career-high 45 saves in the contest. With his 23rd win of the season, Gale also broke the Crusaders' single-season victories record.
  • Stockfish led the way for the Crusaders at the faceoff dot with ten wins.

UP NEXT:
  • The two teams will meet again tomorrow night, Saturday, March 15, at 7 p.m. for the second game of the series.
