NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Holy Cross softball team went head-to-head with Yale for a midweek doubleheader on Mar. 13. The Crusaders fell in both games, 7-2 in game one and 13-4 in game two to the Bulldogs.
GAME ONE: CRUSADERS 2, BULLDOGS 7 (FINAL)
STARTING IN THE CIRCLE:
- Holy Cross: Sophia Roncone (L, 2-5), 3.2 innings pitched, eight hits allowed, seven runs, seven earned.
- Yale: Emma Taylor (W, 4-5), 5.0 innings pitched, two hits allowed, four strikeouts.
IN RELIEF:
- Holy Cross: Avery Toddings, 2.1 innings pitched.
- Yale: Caitlin LaFerney, 2.0 innings pitched, two hits allowed, two runs, two earned, one strikeout.
STEPPING TO THE PLATE:
- Anna Brait: 2-for-3, one home run, one run scored, two RBIs.
- Lauren Perren: 2-for-4, two doubles, four RBIs.
- Ella Gandolfo: 1-for-2, three runs scored, one RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Yale's Lauren Perren hit an RBI double to right field in the bottom of the first for a 1-0 lead.
- The Bulldogs extended their lead in the bottom of the second with an RBI walk taken by Ella Gandolfo and Perren cracking a three RBI double to center field for the 5-0 result.
- Yale tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the third, on an RBI ground out, and the bottom of the fourth with Sophie Woodridge hitting an RBI single to left field.
- Junior Anna Brait crushed a two RBI homer deep over the right field wall in the top of the sixth. Holy Cross ultimately fell 7-2 to the Bulldogs
GAME ONE: CRUSADERS 4, BULLDOGS 13 (FINAL)
STARTING IN THE CIRCLE:
- Holy Cross: Jordan Goedel (L, 2-2), 1.0 innings pitched, four hits allowed, seven runs, four earned, two strikeouts.
- Yale: Grace Westmoreland (W, 1-0), 4.0 innings pitched, three hits allowed, three runs, one earned, three strikeouts.
IN RELIEF:
- Holy Cross: Sophia Roncone, 2.2 innings pitched, six hits allowed, six runs, three earned, two strikeouts.
- Holy Cross: Avery Toddings, 0.1 innings pitched.
- Yale: Sienna Reynolds, . innings pitched, hits allowed, runs, earned, strikeouts.
STEPPING TO THE PLATE:
- Ali Sniegocki: 1-for-4, one home run, one run scored, one RBI.
- Anna Brait: 1-for-3, one run scored.
- Kate Trudgen: 2-for-3.
- Maddie Latta: 2-for-2, two doubles, one run scored, three RBIs.
- Katie Donahey: 1-for-3, one run scored, two RBIs.
- Ella Gandolfo: 1-for-2, two runs scored, one RBI
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Junior captain Ali Sniegocki smacked a lead off homer to left field to kick off the top of the first for the early 1-0 lead. Sophomore Caroline Higgins and junior Brooke Ventrelle extended the Crusader lead to 3-0 on RBI walks.
- In the bottom of the first, the Bulldogs scored two on RBI walks and two more on a Woodridge two RBI double to right field to steal the lead 4-3.
- Yale's Maddie Latta scored a teammate on an RBI double to left field followed by Gandolfo hitting an RBI single to left field. The Bulldogs crossed home one more time in the bottom of the third on a fielding error for the 8-3 result.
- In the bottom of the fourth, Latta hit another double to drive in two runs, Kaitlyn Oikle scored on a wild pitch and Katie Donahey knocked in a two RBI single to center field for the 13-3 advantage.
- Sophomore Ava Gambichler put the ball into play to score teammate Silje Emery in the top of the fifth. The game ended in five innings with a 13-4 final score in favor of Yale.
UP NEXT:
- The Crusaders return to action on Saturday, Mar. 15 for a home opening doubleheader against Siena at Freshman Field in Worcester, Mass.
- First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m.
