Crusaders take Saturday sweep with DH wins over Saint Peter’s

JERSEY CITY, N.J. – The Holy Cross softball team took a Saturday doubleheader sweep over Saint Peter's on Mar. 1. The Crusaders took game one 8-4 and game two 7-4. 

GAME ONE: CRUSADERS 8, PEACOCKS 4 (FINAL)

STARTING IN THE CIRCLE:

  • Holy Cross: Sophia Roncone (W, 2-1), 7.0 innings pitched, 10 hits allowed, four runs, four earned, two strikeouts.
  • Saint Peter's: Angelina Wagner (L, 0-2), 3.0 innings pitched, six hits allowed, five runs, five earned, one strikeout.

IN RELIEF:

  • Saint Peter's: Morgan Lipansky, 2.0 innings pitched, one run, one earned.
  • Saint Peter's: Brielle Coppola, 2.0 innings pitched, one hit allowed, two runs, two earned, one strikeout.

STEPPING TO THE PLATE:

  • Jena Whipple: 2-for-4, one run, three RBI.
  • Morgan Kane: 1-for-2, one double, two runs, one RBI.
  • Lauren Czerwinsk: 2-for-3, one double, one run, one RBI.
  • Jess Forte: 2-for-3, two doubles, one run.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • A big top of the second for the Crusaders with junior Morgan Kane cracking an RBI double to right field, followed by senior captain Jena Whipple with a sacrifice bunt RBI. Junior captain Ali Sniegocki smacked an RBI double to left field and junior Anna Brait crushed a two RBI single to left field for the 5-0 result.
  • The Peacock's Lauren Czerwinski and Olivia Christopher both hit RBI doubles in the bottom of the third to make it a 5-2 game.
  • Senior captain Emma Fong reached on a fielder's choice RBI to score Brait from third in the top of the fourth. Saint Peter's responded at the bottom of the inning, with Taylor Montgomery hitting a sacrifice fly RBI.
  • The Peacocks got within two runs of the Crusaders when Dakota Pitts hit a sacrifice fly RBI in the bottom of the fifth.
  • Whipple helped Holy Cross run away with the win in the top of the sixth, knocking a two RBI single to right field for the 8-4 victory over Saint Peter's.


GAME TWO: CRUSADERS 7, PEACOCKS 4 (FINAL)

STARTING IN THE CIRCLE:

  • Holy Cross: Jordan Goedel, 6.0 innings pitched, five hits allowed, three runs, three earned, eight strikeouts.
  • Saint Peter's: Ava White (L, 2-2), 5.1 innings pitched, eight hits allowed, three runs, three earned, two strikeouts.

IN RELIEF:

  • Holy Cross: Maya Gallagher (W, 1-0), 2.0 innings pitched, two hits allowed, one run, one earned.
  • Saint Peter's: Brielle Coppola, 2.2 innings pitched, six hits allowed, four runs, four earned, one strikeout.

STEPPING TO THE PLATE:

  • Emma Pietrzak: 3-for-4, one home run, two runs, two RBIs.
  • Ali Sniegocki: -for-, one home run, one RBI.
  • Emma Fong: 2-for-4, one double, one RBI.
  • Jess Forte: 1-for-3, one run, two RBIs.
  • Steph Bendzlowicz: 1-for-4, two RBIs.
  • Angelina Wagner: 2-for-3, two runs.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • In the top of the fourth, sophomore Emma Pietrzak crushed a homer for the 1-0 lead. The Peacocks quickly responded in the bottom of the inning with Jess Forte hitting an RBI double to center field and Angelina Wagner scoring on a Steph Bendzlowicz RBI ground out.
  • Sniegocki tied the game 2-2 in the top of the sixth with a home run. Fong reclaimed the lead for Holy Cross with an RBI single to center field. Saint Peter's once again made it an even scored game in the bottom of the inning with Bendzlowicz hitting an RBI single through the left side.
  • After a scoreless seventh inning and a tie score, the game was forced into extra innings. Pietrzak, sophomore Maya Gallagher and Kane all hit RBI singles to extend the Crusader lead to 7-3 in the top of the eighth. Saint Peter's attempted to come back with Forte earning the RBI on a fly out to left field but Holy Cross came out with the 7-4 victory to sweep the doubleheader.

BEHIND THE BOX SCORE: 

  • Pietrzak hit the first homer of the season for the Crusaders
  • Sniegocki hit her first homer of the year.

UP NEXT: 

  • The Crusaders return to action on Sunday, Mar. 2 for a final game with Saint Peter's at Jaroschak Field in Jersey City, N.J. 
  • First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
