Men’s lacrosse defeats Bucknell in double overtime on senior day

WORCESTER, Mass. — The Holy Cross men's lacrosse team won in double overtime in their Patriot League opener against Bucknell, 11-10, Saturday afternoon at Kuzniewski Field.

Holy Cross moves to 3-3 (1-0 PL) with the win, while Bucknell moves to 2-3 (0-1 PL) with the loss.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Sophomore Will Messineo netted his first two goals of the game in a low scoring first quarter that ended 2-1 in favor of the Crusaders.
  • Bucknell outscored Holy Cross 4-1 in the second quarter, with the lone Holy Cross goal coming at the hands of freshman Andrew Ottomanelli, to take the 5-3 lead into the halftime break.
  • The two teams traded goals in the third quarter, with senior John Mitchell finding the back of the net twice.
  • The Crusaders dominated the scoring in the fourth quarter, finding the back of the net five times to Bucknell's two. Senior Henry Sheehan got the scoring started, followed by sophomore Jon-Luke Duley and two from Messineo. Sophomore Jude Lynch's goal with 52 seconds remaining in regulation tied the game at 10-10.
  • Each team had a chance in the first overtime period, with Holy Cross recording the only two shots on goal, but it was Sheehan's fourth goal of the season 18 seconds into the second overtime period that won it for the Crusaders.

BEYOND THE BOX:
  • Junior JR Long recorded 17 saves in the contest, marking his fourth game this season with double digit saves.
  • Junior Julian Jenkins led the defense with four ground balls and three caused turnovers. Freshman Harry Attell finished the day 7-for-9 (.778) at the faceoff X, including the crucial faceoff win in the second overtime period that led to the game winning goal.
  • The last and only other time that Holy Cross defeated Bucknell was on March 11, 2017 at Bucknell (10-8).
  • Prior to the contest, the program recognized their eight seniors – Matt Carbonell, Baker Reding, John Mitchell, Calahan McPherson, Michael Bonomo, Owen Larson, Henry Sheehan, and Luke Shoemaker – as part of their senior day celebration.

UP NEXT:
  • Holy Cross will continue their homestand when they welcome Merrimack to Kuzniewski Field on Tuesday, March 4.
  • Game time is set for 4 p.m.
