Crusaders split Furman Tournament opening doubleheader against Morehead State and Austin Peay

GREENVILLE, S.C. – The Holy Cross softball team opened its 2025 season at the Furman Tournament on Friday, Feb. 21. The Crusaders won game one of the doubleheader 5-2 over Morehead State and fell 6-1 in game two to Austin Peay.

GAME ONE: CRUSADERS 5, EAGLES 2 (FINAL)

STARTING IN THE CIRCLE:

  • Holy Cross: Sophia Roncone (W, 1-0), 7 innings pitched, six hits allowed, two runs, two earned, six strikeouts.
  • Morehead State: Riley Burney (L, 0-6), 4.1 innings pitched, seven hits allowed, five runs, three earned.

IN RELIEF:

  • Morehead State: Emma Solis, 1.2 innings pitched, one hit allowed, two strikeouts.

STEPPING TO THE PLATE:

  • Jena Whipple: 2-for-3, one double, one RBI, one run scored.
  • Emma Pietrzak: 2-for-2, two runs scored
  • Jordan Goedel: 1-for-1, one double, two RBIs
  • Maddy Christopher: 3-for-4, one run scored
  • Victoria Spencer: 1-for-3, one double, two RBIs.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Crusaders scored two runs in the bottom of the first with junior Anna Brait sending junior captain Ali Sniegocki home on a single through the right side and senior captain Jena Whipple singling up the middle to score junior Emma Pietrzak from third.
  • Morehead State tied the game up 2-2 with Victoria Spencer hitting a double to right field to score two of her teammates in the top of the third.
  • Holy Cross reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the fifth with senior captain Emma Fong crushing a double down the left line and Pietrzak turning on the jets to score from second. Freshman Jordan Goedel followed Fong's lead with a big double to drive in both Whipple and junior Morgan Kane for the 5-2 result.


GAME TWO: CRUSADERS 1, GOVERNORS 6 (FINAL)

STARTING IN THE CIRCLE:

  • Holy Cross: Jordan Goedel (L, 0-1), 3.1 innings pitched, five hits allowed, six runs, four earned, four strikeouts.
  • Austin Peay: Emma Thompson, 3.1 innings pitched, five hits allowed, one run, one earned, two strikeouts.

IN RELIEF:

  • Holy Cross: Avery Toddings, 2.2 innings pitched, one hit allowed, one strikeout.
  • Austin Peay: Emberly Nichols (W, 5-2), 3.2 innings pitched, one hit allowed, three strikeouts.

STEPPING TO THE PLATE:

  • Jordan Goedel: 2-for-3, one RBI.
  • Callie Thibault: 1-for-3, one double, one run scored.
  • Macee Roberts: 2-for-3, one double, one RBI.
  • Sammie Shelander: 1-for-3, three RBIs.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • In the bottom of the first, Austin Peay's Macee Roberts hit an RBI single into center field for the 1-0 lead. The Governor's Sammie Shelander reached first on a fielder-choice which scored her teammate on third on the play. 
  • Austin Peay furthered its lead with another fielder's choice RBI by Kylie Campbell for the 3-0 result in the bottom of the second.
  • Goedel hit an RBI single to right field to score senior captain Callie Thibault from third in the top of the fourth.
  • The Governors scored three runs off of a Shelander RBI single and a throwing error for the 6-1 score.

BEHIND THE BOX SCORE: 

  • Coach Jon Ladino earned his first win as head coach of the Crusaders in the 5-2 victory over Morehead State.
  • Goedel made her first career start as a pitcher.

UP NEXT: 

  • The Crusaders return to action at the Furman Tournament with a doubleheader on Saturday, Feb. 22 at Pepsi Stadium. 
  • First pitch against Furman is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. 
  • Holy Cross will then face Northern Iowa at 6:30 p.m.
