DeBoer nets overtime winner to lift men’s ice hockey over Canisius

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Holy Cross men's ice hockey team defeated Canisius, 3-2 in overtime, on Saturday night at the Hart Center Rink.

Holy Cross improves to 14-11-2 (13-4-2 AHA) on the season, while Canisius moves to 9-5-2 (9-7-2 AHA).

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Canisius got on the board 3:26 into the first period.
  • Junior Michael Abgrall netted the equalizer with 7:35 remaining in the first. Picking up the rebound off a Canisius shot, junior Timothy Heinke found himself in a two-on-one with Abgrall, waiting until the lone defender committed to him before sending the backhand pass across to Abgrall for the tap in goal.
  • Junior Devin Phillips netted the go-ahead goal with 9:20 to play in the second period, knocking in a rebound off of a shot by sophomore Jack Stockfish that found its way behind the Canisius netminder.
  • Canisius tied the game at 2-2 with a power play goal with 1:18 left to play.
  • Earning a power play opportunity in the overtime period, junior Matt DeBoer found the back of the net to send the Crusaders home with the extra point.

  • Senior Thomas Gale recorded 36 saves in the contest, marking his 13th game this season with 30+ saves.
  • The Crusaders dominated at the faceoff dot, winning 42 of the 66 draws (63.6%). Stockfish and Abgrall tied for the game-lead in faceoff wins with 14 each.
  • Holy Cross held Canisius to just four combined shots in their four power play opportunities.
