Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Crusaders downed by No. 7 Duke

DURHAM, N.C. – The Holy Cross women's basketball team continued on the road to No. 7 Duke for a Sunday afternoon competition in Cameron Indoor Stadium. The Crusaders fell 91-48 on the road to the Blue Devils.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Crusaders came out ready to fight, with senior guard Mary-Elizabeth Donnelly knocking down three triples within the first six minutes of action for nine of Holy Cross's 12 points. Duke was quick to recover after the first media timeout, with Jordan Wood collecting six points to give the Blue Devils the 17-12 lead at the end of the quarter.
  • Wood and teammate Toby Fournier led a Blue Devils' scoring surge in the second period, going on an 11-0 run, before freshman guard Brianna McDermott broke through with a made free throw. Duke held the Crusaders to only four points in the quarter.
  • At halftime, Duke had a 45-16 lead over Holy Cross. Wood and Fournier combined 29 points with the Blue Devils shooting 40% from the field.
  • Holy Cross came out with energy to start the third quarter, with senior captain Kaitlyn Flanagan hitting back-to-back jumpers. Senior guard Simone Foreman and the trio of juniors Kendall Eddy, Janie Bachmann and Simone Lewis also contributed on the scoring front. Fournier netted 13 of Duke's 23 points through 30 minutes of play. The Blue Devils extended their lead to 68-35 to enter the final frame. 
  • Duke's Ashlon Jackson scored all 15 points in the final quarter. McDermott had a season high of seven points while junior guard Hannah Griffin earned three assists, tying her career high, and three steals to end the game. Duke took the 91-48 win over Holy Cross.
  • The Blue Devils were 33-for-66 from the field while the Crusaders shot 32% from three-point range.

  • The Crusaders (1-1) return to action on Wednesday, Nov. 12, for a 6:00 pm tip-off against Brown (0-1) in Worcester, Mass., at the Hart Center Arena.
