PROVO, Utah – The Holy Cross men's basketball team dropped a 98-53 decision to No. 8 nationally-ranked BYU Saturday evening at the Marriott Center.
The loss was the second of the year for the Crusaders while the ranked Cougars improve to 2-0.
Holy Cross was led by sophomore guard
Tyler Boston who dropped 12 points. Classmate,
Aidan Richard joined his teammate in double-figures with 11 points.
For BYU, Richie Saunders scored a game-high 20 points with four steals while Associate Press Preseason All-American AJ Dybantsa stuffed the stat sheet with 17 points (7-of-10, 70.0 percent FG), a game-high eight rebounds with three assists.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- BYU began the game on a 10-0 run getting a hoop and harm by Saunders 1:46 into the game. Boston temporarily halted the scoring stretch draining a pair of freebies at the stripe at the 16:54 mark. Junior guard/forward Joe Nugent knocked down the first basket of the game for the Crusaders, a baseline mid-range jumper to trail 17-4. Boston drive through the lane and kissed a layup high off the glass for the and1 making it 21-7 BYU.
- Back-to-back buckets from junior guard John St. Germain and junior guard Gabe Warren brought the Crusaders within 14, 27-13 with 9:48 left before the half. Following 1-of-2 at the line from Warren, BYU produced 14 straight to lead 47-18. Holy Cross trailed 58-25 at the break.
- Richard canned a corner triple for the Crusaders' first three-pointer of the game and followed that up firing a right wing three-ball with a Williams jumper trimming the deficit to 68-37 with 13:38 left. Sophomore forward Chuck Hare scored his first collegiate point at the foul line with 8:02 to go.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
- Hare, freshman guard/forward Jude Haigh, sophomore guard Austin Mejia and freshman forward Ethan Clark made their collegiate debuts.
- Holy Cross won the battle on the offensive glass out rebounding BYU 9-to-4 and they had 9 second chance points to the Cougars' two.
