Men’s ice hockey overcomes two three-goal deficits, falls in overtime to No. 8 Quinnipiac

HAMDEN, Conn. - The Holy Cross men's ice hockey team fell to No. 8 Quinnipiac, 7-6 in overtime, Wednesday evening at M&T Bank Arena.

With the loss, Holy Cross moves to 9-6-1, while Quinnipiac improves to 10-3-2.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Quinnipiac took a 3-0 lead into the first intermission, scoring at the 18:39, 12:04, and 0:50 marks of the opening period.
  • Sophomore Noah Eyre broke up the shutout with three minutes remaining in the middle frame, finding the corner of the net on the power play opportunity for his fourth goal of the season.
  • Junior Ty Gagno found open space on a breakout following a penalty kill, sending a quick wrist shot into the top right corner of the net to bring the Crusaders within one with 17:39 left to play in regulation.
  • Senior Matt DeBoer tied the game two minutes later, knocking a rebound off the Bobcat's netminder into the back of the net.
  • Quinnipiac regained the lead with 15:31 to play, before extending the lead to 6-3 with goals at 13:25 and 9:46.
  • DeBoer scored his second of the game with 5:08 to play, sending a one-timer off a face-off win by junior Jack Stockfish into the back of the net, before senior Michael Abgrall cut the lead to 6-5 when he banked the puck off the goaltender into the net with three minutes to play.
  • Pulling the goaltender for an extra attacker with 2:47 to play, DeBoer completed his first collegiate hat trick and tied the game at 6-6, scoring once again off a face-off win by Stockfish.
  • Quinnipiac would prevail in overtime, scoring with 1:39 left to play in the extra period.

BEYOND THE BOX:
  • Junior Connor MacKenzie recorded 26 saves in the contest.
  • Seniors Lachlan Getz and Mack Oliphant led both sides with three blocked shots each.
  • With his +2 performance tonight, senior Jack Seymour improved his season total to +20, which leads the nation by four.
  • DeBoer's hat trick was the first by a Crusader since John Gelatt's on Feb. 7, 2025 at RIT.

  • Holy Cross will return home to the Hart Center Rink to close out the first half of their 2025-26 campaign when they host Mercyhurst on Saturday, Dec. 6 at 2 p.m.
