BOSTON — The Holy Cross football team's defensive unit recorded five takeaways, including a pair of pick-sixes, en route to a 42-7 victory in the 2025 season finale against Patriot League opponent Georgetown at historic Fenway Park Saturday evening.
The junior defensive back trio of Eli Thompson, Chisom Onwuzurigbo and Cam Jones starred in the game for the Crusaders. Thompson notched a pair of interceptions, including a 90-yard pick six in the third quarter. Onwuzurigbo had a pick and a fumble recovery in the fourth quarter, and Jones recorded a pick six in the fourth quarter. against the Hoyas. Junior Adam Due tallied a team-high nine tackles.
Senior running back Sam Slade had an 88-yard touchdown, and senior wide receiver Max Mosey finished with 48 rushing yards and 37 receiving yards.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Georgetown went three and out on their opening drive, and Holy Cross got a 33-yard punt return from Mosey to set up their first series in opposing territory.
- Holy Cross went right down the field on their opening possession, getting a 16-yard rush from senior running back Nyeoti Punni and a nine-yard touchdown pass from freshman quarterback Dominic Campanile to sophomore receiver Alijah Cason with 10:08 left for the 7-0 lead.
- The Hoyas strung together a drive, but their momentum was stalled when Thompson picked off a pass with 4:21 left in the quarter.
- Midway through the second stanza, senior defensive end Colin Reynolds came up with a huge sack on third down to pin Georgetown deep by their goalline. The Crusaders came up with a blocked punt on the next play, as junior defensive back Donovan Comestro got his hands on the attempt and senior linebacker Sam Boyer jumped on the ball and rolled into the end zone for the 14-0 Crusader lead with 6:26 left before halftime.
- Another clutch play on third down, with Onwuzurigbo intercepting the second pass of the game for Holy Cross, stymied another Georgetown drive with 2:46 left in the half.
- Georgetown went for it on fourth-and-one from the Holy Cross 21-yard line with under a minute to go, and sophomore linebacker Lathan Croley tacked the Hoya ballcarrier short of the line to gain just before the intermission.
- The Hoyas drove into Crusader territory again and Thompson had a 90-yard pick six for the 21-0 Holy Cross lead with 7:55 left in the third.
- Georgetown finally got on the board following the pick-six, using a nine-play, 72-yard scoring drive capped off by a 17-yard touchdown pass making it 21-7.
- In the fourth quarter, the Hoyas again worked their way into Holy Cross territory and committed their fourth turnover of the contest when junior linebacker Cam Santee forced a fumble recovered by Onwuzurigbo at the 11:41 mark.
- Mosey received a direct snap and took it 46 yards for a touchdown, with Jones' pick-six and senior running back Sam Slade's 88-yard touchdown run late in the fourth quarter made it 42-7 Crusaders.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
- Holy Cross earned its first win at Fenway Park in 1956 and improved to 10-12 all-time at American's Most Beloved Ballpark.
- The Crusaders earned their 10th straight victory against the Hoyas.
- Holy Cross held Georgetown to 57 total yards in the first half.
- The Crusaders recorded six sacks on the day, their second straight week with at least six sacks.
- Slade's touchdown was the first of his career.
- Thompson's pick-six was his second of the season; with two interceptions on the day, he had his second career multi-interception game.
