Women’s basketball drops Turnpike Trophy contest to Boston University

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Holy Cross women's basketball team five game winning streak was snapped by Patriot League foe Boston University falling 52-49 Monday in Case Gymnasium.

Junior Mary-Elizabeth Donnelly scored a team-best 14 points on 50 percent (4-of-8) shooting canning three triples for the Crusaders (14-6, 7-2 PL). Senior Lindsay Berger added 13 points while junior Kaitlyn Flanagan chipped in 12 points, five rebounds and four assists.

For the Terriers (8-12, 2-7 PL), Anete Adler scored a game-high 19 points on 9-of-12 (75.0 percent) shooting.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Donnelly drilled a three on the right wing to tie the score 3-3 early in the first. On the next trip down the court she connected on another triple to build the lead to 6-3. BU regained the edge at 7-6 off four straight points. Sophomore Janie Bachmann made a baseline cut for two for the 8-7 Crusader margin. A Donnelly elbow jumper with two freebies by Flanagan put Holy Cross ahead 12-9 after one.
  • Holy Cross started the second on a 7-2 run with Flanagan draining a mid-range pull-up in transition for the 19-11 score at the 7:12 mark. Berger made a nice post move to expand the run to 9-2 and lead to 21-11. From there, BU closed the stanza on a 10-4 run to trail 25-21 at the half.
  • A 9-3 run to start the third gave the Terriers a two point 30-28 lead at the media stoppage. Senior Lauren Huber banked in a layup to move the guests back in the lead at 32-31. BU led 35-33 through three.
  • Huber got a shooters touch on a corner jumper to tie the game 35-35. Two possessions later she gave the Crusaders the lead at 39-37. Berger knocked down a jumper at the free throw line for the 45-42 Crusader lead. Trailing by one, Flanagan converted a mid-range shot for the short lived 47-46 lead. BU sank a stepback three-pointer and Holy Cross turned the ball over leading to a pair of BU freebies. Holy Cross had a chance to tie the score, however their shot was off the mark.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
  • Donnelly scored 13 of her 14 points in the first half while 11 of Berger's 13 markers came in the second half.
  • BU got 24 bench points compared to the Crusaders' eight.
  • Huber matched a career-high with six points.
