WORCESTER, Mass. – Senior forward
Evan Jones scored his team-leading fifth goal of the season, but the Holy Cross men's soccer team was defeated by Loyola (Md.) 2-1 at Linda Johnson Smith Soccer Stadium. The Crusaders fall to 2-5-3 on the season and 1-1-1 in the Patriot League, while the Greyhounds improve to 1-5-3 overall and 1-1-1 in the conference.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
• Loyola opened the scoring in the 72nd minute, when Richie Nichols connected from 22 yards out at the top of the penalty box off a pass from Caden Stafford.
• Holy Cross tied up the game at 1-1 in the 77th minute, as Jones converted on a direct free kick from 23 yards away above the top left side of the box.
• But in the 90th minute, Seth Powder put home a rebound after a shot by Stafford was saved to give the Greyhounds the win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
• Loyola finished the game with an 18-9 advantage in shots and a 7-2 edge in corner kicks.
• Senior goalkeeper
Josh Tubbs tied his career high with seven saves on the afternoon.
• Jones now has 58 points on 23 goals and 12 assists in his collegiate career, standing in sixth place on the Crusaders' all-time scoring list.
