Field hockey falls to Providence in shootout

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Holy Cross field hockey team tied Providence, 3-3, before falling in a tie-breaking shootout, 3-2, on Sunday afternoon at Lennon Family Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The two teams were scoreless - and without a shot - through the first quarter before senior Molly Vinton found the back of the net just over ten minutes into the second quarter. Vinton picked up her own rebound off the Friars' goalkeepers' pads and sent the ball past her for the 1-0 lead.
  • With five seconds remaining in the half, Providence converted on their first corner of the game.
  • Fifth year Sarah Potter broke the tie just under eight minutes into the second half, tipping in a crossing pass by junior Julia Carrozza.
  • Three minutes later, the Friars tied the game back up, converting on another penalty corner opportunity.
  • Sophomore Maguire Sturgis regained the lead for the Crusaders with just under 3:30 left in the contest, dribbling the ball down the field and converting on a reverse stick shot.
  • Under a minute later, Providence buried a rebound to tie the game at 3-3 and send it to overtime.
  • Both teams failed to score over the course of the two overtime periods, with Holy Cross picking up a penalty corner and shot in each period.
  • Sophomore Saskia Williams and Sturgis each converted on their shootout attempts, though the initial rounds of the shootout ended in a 2-2 tie. Providence's Cami Crook converted on her attempt in the seventh round to win the game for the Friars.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Freshman netminder Mia McCloskey made a game-high six saves, all of which came in the third quarter.
  • The two teams finished the afternoon even in penalty corners with seven each. Providence held the edge in shots, 14-10, and shots on goal, 9-6.

UP NEXT:
  • Holy Cross will return home to face Sacred Heart on Wednesday, Sept. 25 at 6 p.m.
