Six players score goals in field hockey's shutout of Merrimack

WORCESTER, Mass. - The Holy Cross field hockey team shutout Merrimack, 7-0, Friday night at the Hart Turf Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Following a scoreless first quarter, the Crusaders got on the board early and often, netting two goals in the second and fourth quarters, and three in the third.
  • Junior Megan Schienbein started the scoring for the Crusaders with a penalty corner goal just over three minutes into the second frame. Schienbein collected sophomore Marissa MacLean's insert, sweeping the goal into the net for the score.
  • Senior Molly Vinton picked up her first goal of the season, tipping in a pass across the circle by sophomore Saskia Williams just seven minutes later to take the 2-0 lead.
  • Junior Kendall Blomquist started the scoring in the second half with her first goal of the season, picking up the rebound of a MacLean shot that bounced off the post to extend the Crusader lead.
  • Senior Meggan Fourie netted her first goal of the game off a breakaway, stealing the ball off a Merrimack defender's stick before beating the goalkeeper shortside for the 'Saders' fifth goal.
  • Fourie picked up her second goal of the game and Patriot League-leading fifth of the season just four minutes after her first goal on a penalty stroke opportunity.
  • Fifth year Sarah Potter etched her name into the box score in the fourth quarter when she tipped in a shot by Fourie to extend the lead to 6-0.
  • MacLean got a goal of her own - the Crusaders' seventh and final tally - after she picked up a pass by freshman Jocelyn Monti and sent the ball into the opposite corner.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Freshman netminder Mia McCloskey finished the night with six saves, her second highest mark of the season, and earned her first collegiate shutout. McCloskey sits in fourth in the Patriot League in save percentage (.700), goals-against (2.16), and saves per game (5.25).
  • Schienbein picked up her sixth defensive save of her career in the contest.
  • The Crusaders have started the season 3-0 at home for the first time since 2021.

UP NEXT:
