FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Holy Cross women's soccer team opened the 2024 season on the road with a close 2-1 loss to Fairfield at Lessing Field on Thursday afternoon.

IN GOAL:

• Holy Cross: Julia Walsh (L, 0-1), 6 saves
• Fairfield: Katie Wright (W, 1-0), 3 saves

HOW IT HAPPENED:

• In the first half, sophomore Charlotte Hanchar netted the first goal of the season, assisted by fellow sophomore Karenna Beckstein, at 6:39 to take a 1-0 lead.
• The Stags led the Crusaders 6-5 in shots and 3-0 in corners through 45 minutes. 
• In the second half, Fairfield responded with an equalizing goal scored by Maddy Theriault at the 48:10 mark. Ashlyn Walsh placed the game-winning goal past Walsh at 66:43 to take the 2-1 lead. 
• Fairfield ended the game with a 12-11 advantage in shots and 4-3 in corners.
