William Kelleher receives Cooney Award

WORCESTER, Mass. – Senior William Kelleher, a member of the Holy Cross men's tennis team, has been selected as the 2023-2024 winner of the Honorable John P. Cooney Memorial Award. Presented by the Holy Cross Varsity Club in memory of Judge John P. Cooney (Class of 1923), the Cooney Award goes to a senior letterwinner who performed beyond all expectations with courage, loyalty and dedication.

Kelleher was a four-year starter for the Crusaders, including two seasons as the team's No. 1 singles player. He finished his career with an overall singles record of 16-51, while going 30-35 in doubles action. In 2023, Kelleher became the first Holy Cross player to ever win a main-draw singles match in Intercollegiate Tennis Association regional competition, defeating Paolo Flores of Marist 6-1, 7-6 (9-7). In addition, his 30 career doubles victories are the second-most on record in program history.

A two-year team captain, Kelleher was a three-time selection to the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll. Also a three-year member of the Holy Cross Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, he was selected to represent the Patriot League at the 2024 NCAA Student-Athlete Leadership Forum.
