Baseball secures walkoff win vs. Brown

WORCESTER, Mass. — After erasing an four-run early deficit, the Holy Cross baseball team loaded up the bases in the bottom of the ninth to set the stage for an RBI single from junior shortstop Jimmy King — and 6-5 walkoff victory for the Crusaders against Brown on Tuesday, April 30 at Fitton Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED: 
  • After leadoff batter Mark Henshon reached on an error by the Crusaders, an RBI single drove in the first run of the game for the Bears. 
  • Brown hit three solo home runs in the top of the fifth to extend its lead to 4-0. 
  • Junior center fielder Connor Cooney doubled to lead off the bottom of the fifth, and freshman designated hitter Colin Brown launched a home run to left field to cut the score in half. For his third RBI of the day, Brown singled down the left field line to make it a 4-3 game in the sixth inning. 
  • Sophomore right fielder Jack Toomey blasted a solo home run to lead off the seventh and even the score at 4-4. 
  • After the Bears loaded up the bases in the top of the eighth, they pushed a run across with a sacrifice fly. 
  • With Brown holding on to a 5-4 lead heading into the bottom of the ninth, Holy Cross' first four batters reached after three hit batters and a walk, evening the score at 5-5. King then sent a single up the middle to secure the 6-5 walkoff win for the Crusaders. 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE: 
  • King now has 21 stolen bases on the season, which rank as the second-most in single-season program history. He also sits in second place in the Patriot League in that category. 
  • Brown's home run was the first of his collegiate career. 
DUE UP: 
  • Holy Cross hosts Lafayette to kick off its final weekend of the regular season on Saturday, May 4. 
  • First pitch of the Senior Day doubleheader is set for 1 p.m.
