Softball downed twice at Bryant Tuesday

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Holy Cross softball team fell to nonconference opponent Bryant twice on Tuesday losing 10-7 in nine innings during game on and 11-2 in five innings during game two.

The losses were the 30th and 31st of the year for the Crusaders while the Bulldogs won their ninth and 10th straight games and move to 30-11 overall.

Sophomore Ali Sniegocki reached in all five plate appearances in game one going 4-for-4 with a home run, two RBI, a walk and three runs scored. Senior Megan Yurchick recorded her 100th career hit with a double in the fifth inning of game one.
 
GAME ONE: BULLDOGS 10, CRUSADERS 7 (FINAL – 9 INN.)
 
STARTING IN THE CIRCLE:
  • Caroline Paolantonio: ND, 5.0 innings pitched, 11 hits allowed, five earned runs, four strikeouts.
  • Sophomore Sophia Roncone: L, (4-15), 8.1 innings pitched, 11 hits allowed, nine earned runs, six walks, five strikeouts.
IN RELIEF:
  • Brooke Tracy: W, (7-2), 4.0 innings pitched, two hits allowed, earned run, walk, five strikeouts.
STEPPING TO THE PLATE:
  • Ali Sniegocki: 4-for-4, three runs scored, home run, two RBI, walk.
  • Sophomore Anna Brait: 2-for-5, RBI.
  • Senior Claire McCann: 2-for-5.
  • Senior Morgan Jensen: 1-for-4, double, RBI, run scored.
  • Hannah Cochran: 3-for-4, two home runs, four RBI, four runs scored.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Holy Cross got on the board in the first inning as a pair of hits from Sniegocki and Brait put two runners on with no outs. Senior Jessica Mott singled through the left side with one out for the 1-0 Crusader lead.
  • Bryant loaded the bases in the bottom of the second and Roncone got a deep fly out to left to strand the runners.
  • Sniegocki smacked the first pitch of the third inning over the wall for the 2-0 Crusader advantage.
  • The Bulldogs tied the game, 2-2 with one swing in bottom half of the third. Their second home run of the inning made it 3-2 Bryant.
  • The Crusaders regained the lead, 4-3 in the next half inning with Jensen pulling an RBI double. She hustled in from second base on a RBI single by Sniegocki.
  • Two runs in the top of the fifth one off a Yurchick double and a freshman Emma Pietrzak opposite field single to right increased the edge to 6-3. Another Crusader insurance run via a Brait single made it 7-3.
  • Bryant rallied to tie the game getting a run in the sixth and three in the seventh to send the game to extras. They belted a walk-off homer in the ninth to complete the comeback.
GAME TWO: BULLDOGS 11, CRUSADERS 2 (FINAL – 5 INN.)
 
STARTING IN THE CIRCLE:
  • Lexi Powell: W (2-0), 4.0 innings pitched, seven hits allowed, two earned runs, three strikeouts.
  • Senior Megan Yurchick: L, (5-15), three hits allowed, three earned runs, four walks.
IN RELIEF:
  • Freshman Maya Gallagher: 2.1 innings pitched, five hits allowed, three earned runs.
  • Kylie Kenney: 1.0 innings pitched, one hit allowed, one walk, three strikeouts.
STEPPING TO THE PLATE:
  • Sophomore Anna Brait: 1-for-3, home run two RBI, run scored.
  • Claire McCann: 2-for-3.
  • Freshman Ava Gambichler: 2-for-2.
  • Sam Rohwer: 2-for-3, home run, five RBI, run scored.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Sniegocki drilled a first pitch single up the middle and came home to score on a Brait homer to put the Crusaders in the lead 2-0.
  • In the first and second, Bryant scored a combined six runs to lead 6-2 in the early stages.
  • A two-run homer in the third expanded the margin to 8-2 for the hosts.
  • Three consecutive one out singles in the fourth loaded the bases for Holy Cross, but Bryant got out of trouble to remain ahead.
  • A three run homer in the fourth increased the edge to 11-2 in favor of Bryant.
DUE UP:
  • Holy Cross returns home on Thursday, April 25 for a nonconference and Cousy Cup twinbill with Maine
  • First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
