Women’s basketball downed by Boston University

BOSTON – The Holy Cross women's basketball team was defeated by Patriot League opponent Boston University 66-63 Saturday afternoon in Case Gymnasium.

The win sends the Terriers to 18-10, 10-7 PL while the Crusaders drop to 16-12, 10-7 PL.

Three players reached double-figures for the Crusaders. Senior Bronagh Power-Cassidy led the way with 15 points while classmate Janelle Allen added 12 points and sophomore Kaitlyn Flanagan posted 11 points.

For BU, Caitlin Weimar dropped a contest-best 25 points for the hosts.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Holy Cross opened up the game on an 11-2 outburst forcing the Terriers in to an early timeout. After the stoppage, Power-Cassidy drilled a deep wing three for the 14-2 Crusader lead. She reached her 12th point of the period with under two minutes to go and Allen drained a mid-range buzzer beater as the Crusaders led 22-8.
  • The lead expanded to a game-high, 21, 29-8 when Allen hit on another jumper at the 8:30 mark. BU out produced the Crusaders 20-11 over the remainder of the second to trail 40-28 at the intermission.
  • BU dropped the deficit to single figures, 42-35 and Power-Cassidy picked up her fourth foul by fouling a BU shooter in the process of a shot attempt. With the clock winding down at the end of the third, the rock found sophomore Meg Cahalan and she got a friendly bounce on a three-pointer to increase the margin to 10, 55-45 through three.
  • A 21-8 fourth quarter for the Terriers including a Weimar hoop and harm with 21 seconds to go put them ahead for good.
OUTSIDE THE BOX:
  • There were only two lead changes in the game and the Crusaders led for 37:39 of the contest.
  • BU shot 61.5 percent (8-of-13) from the field in the fourth quarter while Holy Cross shot 18.2 percent (2-for-11).
