THE DECISION:

L: Macchiarola (1-1)

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Hawaii took an early lead in the bottom of the second. A leadoff double and balk put a Rainbow Warriors runner on third, and a single through the left side gave Hawaii a 1-0 advantage.
  • A four-run third — with three runs unearned — extended the Hawaii lead to 5-0.
  • An RBI double and passed ball made the Rainbow Warriors' lead 7-0 by the fifth inning.
  • A solo homer to lead off the sixth, followed by a sacrifice fly, made it a 9-0 game for Hawaii.
  • In the seventh inning, Hawaii's run total grew to double digits with an RBI single. A bases-loaded single and sac fly gave the Rainbow Warriors a 12-0 advantage in the eighth.
  • In the top of the ninth, freshman shortstop Zach Wieder and junior left fielder Connor Cooney got on base after a pair of walks. Wieder was then driven home by a pinch-hit double from sophomore CJ Egrie to prevent the shutout.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
  • Freshman pitcher Dan Mateffy finished with a pair of strikeouts, recording the first strikeouts of his collegiate career.
  • Freshman pitcher Nick Harnisch made his collegiate debut on the mound and recorded his first career strikeout.
DUE UP:
  • Holy Cross and Hawaii resume the four-game series on Saturday, March 2.
  • First pitch is set for 11:30 p.m. ET.
