HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • After three scoreless innings, the Crusaders were the first to get on the board in the top of the fourth. Freshman second baseman Alex Sandell hit a two-out single and came around to score after a double by freshman designated hitter John LaFleur. After back-to-back walks, freshman shortstop Zach Wieder hit a two-run single to extend the Holy Cross lead to 3-0.
  • UC Riverside cut into the Holy Cross lead with two runs in the bottom of the fourth.
  • Holy Cross loaded up the bases in the top of the sixth after a pinch-hit double by senior Patrick Casserly and walks issued to freshman catcher Van Coughlin and junior left fielder Connor Cooney. Senior right fielder Jake McElroy then hit a grand slam to build a 7-2 lead for the Crusaders.
  • The Highlanders continued to push, with two more runs in the bottom of the sixth to cut within 7-4.
  • Sophomore third baseman Cam Bryant led off the seventh inning with a triple and later scored on a wild pitch. Holy Cross tacked on another run in the eighth after an RBI single by freshman Braden Connors to extend the lead to 9-4.
  • UC Riverside scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth to cut within 9-6, but the Crusaders prevented any bigger of a rally attempt.
DUE UP:
  • Holy Cross returns to New England and will face the University of Massachusetts on Tuesday, March 12.
  • First pitch is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. at Springfield College.
