LEWISBURG, Pa. – Senior
Bronagh Power-Cassidy came through in the clutch for the Holy Cross women's basketball team as she scored a season-high 26 points in the Crusaders 58-47 overtime victory at Bucknell Wednesday evening.
The win snapped a four game losing streak for the Crusaders (15-10, 9-5 PL) while the setback sends the Bison to 9-16, 6-8 PL.
16 of Power-Cassidy's season-high 26 markers came in the fourth quarter and overtime. In the extra frame she was a perfect 2-for-2 from the floor and 4-for-4 at the stripe for nine points.
The Holy Cross defensive unit held Bucknell scoreless for 4:24 of overtime until a pair of freebies with 36 seconds left opened their scoring in the free period. The Crusaders outscored them 13-2 over the games final five minutes.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- With the game tied 4-4, senior Callie Wright knocked down a baseline jumper off a sophomore Simone Foreman feed for the 6-4 Crusader lead at the 4:29 mark. A pair of Foreman free throws increased the margin to 8-4. Bucknell produced five straight before senior Cara McCormack cashed a wing three for the 11-9 lead through one.
- A pair of Bucknell free throw put them ahead 16-14 before Wright found Power-Cassidy open on the left wing for a triple putting the Crusaders back ahead 17-16. Power-Cassidy split free throws making it 20-16. Bucknell produced an 8-2 run to lead by two before McCormack was fouled while hitting a jumper making it 25-24 at the half.
- In the third, the hosts led 30-27 until sophomore Meg Cahalan connected on a three to knot the game, 30 all. Holy Cross got the final four points of the stanza via sophomore Kaitlyn Flanagan and Foreman for the 36-34 edge through three.
- Back-to-back threes from Power-Cassidy put the Crusaders in the lead 44-40 with 6:25 to go. Bucknell got their second three of the game with 1:22 left to take a one, point 45-44 lead. A Holy Cross free throw tied the game 45-45. Both teams had an opportunity to take the lead late, but the shots were off the mark.
OUTSIDE THE BOX:
- Senior Bronagh Power-Cassidy earned a start for the 100th time in her collegiate career.
- Power-Cassidy (1,241) cracked the top-20 on the team's all-time scoring list moving to 17th passing, Mary Helen Walker (1,217, 1987-1991), Amy Lepley (1,220 2009-2013), Anna Kinne (1,234, 1996-2000) and Raquel Scott (1,240, 2012-2016).
- Power-Cassidy moved to sixth place (165) on the program's all-time three-pointer list passing Anna Kinne (1996-2000).
- Power-Cassidy has eclipsed the 20 point mark seven times in 2023-24 and the Crusaders are 6-1 (.857) in those games.
- Flanagan had zero turnovers for the ninth time in her career. The Crusaders are 9-0 (1.000) in those games.
- Foreman snared 10 rebounds, it was her 10th double-digit rebound game of the season and Holy Cross is 8-2 (.800) in those contests.
- The Crusaders held Bucknell to 11.1 percent (2-of-18) three-point efficiency.
- McCormack established a new career-high with nine boards in the game.
