WORCESTER, Mass.- The Holy Cross women's ice hockey team travels to Burlington, Vt. for a Saturday afternoon game at Vermont on Nov. 9. Puck drop is scheduled for 1:00 pm at Gutterson Fieldhouse. Fans can tune into the broadcast on ESPN+.
THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT HOLY CROSS (4-3-1, 1-2-1 Hockey East):
- The Crusaders most recently took on No. 10 UConn on Nov. 1 and 2. The Huskies took game one just squeaking out a 2-1 win in overtime. The Crusaders took hosted game two falling 2-0.
- In game one, the Crusaders took a late 1-0 lead in the opening frame with a goal by sophomore assistant captain Emily Crovo at 17:16. She was assisted by senior forward Madison Michals and junior defender Taylor Cantelon.
- Neither team scored in the second period. Hornung made 12 saves to Chan's 3 in the period.
- In the third period, UConn's Maya Serdachny hit the equalizer with less than five minutes left in regulation to force the game into overtime.
- The Huskies took the 2-1 win with a Ashley Allard overtime game-winner at 1:41.
- In game two, the Huskies got on the board early in the first period with a goal by Kyla Josifovic at 3:50 for the 1-0 lead.
- In the second period, UConn extended their lead with a power-play goal scored by Claire Murdoch at 13:35.
- Neither team scored in the third period. The Huskies came out with the 2-0 win over the Crusaders.
- Crovo is currently Holy Cross's leading scorer with six goals on the year, three of which were on the power-play, and has the most points of the squad (7). Sophomore forward Reghan Chadwick has the most assists on the team with four so far. Senior captain Emma Min leads the Crusaders defense with 31 blocks so far this season.
- Junior goalie Abby Hornung started in between the pipes for the Crusaders in both games against the nationally-ranked Huskies making a season-high 36 saves in game one and 30 saves in game two. Hornung now has 1.95 goals against with a .941 save percentage.
CLUES ON THE CATAMOUNTS (3-7-0, 2-4-0 HE):
- The Catamounts ended the 2023-24 campaign with a 13-17-5 overall record and a 10-7-1 conference record. Vermont concluded the season in the Hockey East Quarterfinals falling to #3-seeded New Hampshire 3-0 on Mar. 2.
- Ahead of the 2024-25 season, Vermont was tabbed to finish seventh in Hockey East according to the Preseason Coaches Poll. The Catamounts return an All-Rookie team selection, three of their top five leading scorers, one of their top five strongest defenders, and two of their three active goalies. Vermont welcomes eight new Catamounts, three first years and five transfers to complete their roster for the year.
- Most recently the Catamounts split the Nov. 1/2 weekend with Maine dropping game one 5-1 and taking game two 2-1.
- In game one, the Black Bears scored one goal in the first periof, two goals in the second and two in the third. The lone Catamount goal came from sophomore forward Cecilia DesLauriers unassisted at 12:48 in the final frame.Maine once again struck first on the scoreboard just 24 seconds into game two. Vermont responded with a goal of their own at 3:12 in the first netted by graduate forward Grace Nelles. She was assisted by sophomores Hailey Eikos and Rose-Marie Brochu.
- It wasn't until halfway through the second period that Nelles scored the go-ahead goal and game winner at 11:23. She was assisted by sophomores Kaylee Lewis and Ashley Kokavec. A scoreless third period led to Vermont earning the 2-1 victory.
- Senior forward Evelyne Blais-Savoie currently resides as the Catamounts leading scorer with four goals on the season. Junior forward Lara Beecher leads Vermont with the most assists (4) and points (7) so far this year. Redshirt junior defenseman Anna Podein has 22 blocks this season, the most of any Catamount.
- Senior goalie Jane Gervais has become to go-to choice in the net for Vermont, starting eight of the 11 games so far this year. She made 35 saves in game one and 16 saves in game two against the Black Bears for a current 3.20 goals-against average and .898 save percentage.
LAST TIME THEY MET:
- Holy Cross and UConn met last season. The Crusaders traveled to the Burlington, Vt. fell to the Catamounts in a close 3-2 in game two of the series.
- The Crusaders hold a 4-12-1 all-time and 4-9-1 conference series record against the Catamounts.
