Volleyball’s Lane double-doubles as season ends at Navy Saturday

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Holy Cross volleyball senior Abbie Lane recorded a double-double with 11 kills and 11 digs in the season finale at Patriot League foe Navy Saturday afternoon in the Brown Field House. The Crusaders were upended by the Midshipmen 3-0.

The double-double was the fourth of the season for Lane and 23rd in her collegiate career. She finished her time on The Hill with 851 kills which is good enough for sixth place on the program's all-time list.

The loss was the 23rd of the year for the Crusaders and 16th in league play while the Midshipmen won for the seventh time and seventh in league play.

HOW IT HAPPENED: 
  • Lane leveled the score 5-5 following a reception and tipping the ball from the outside. Navy placed an ace to lead 7-5. Three straight Crusader kills, two from freshman Winn Godier and one from freshman Gabby Wold put them in front 8-7. A 4-0 Navy run opened up an 11-8 edge. Another Lane tip tied the set 13 all. An 9-2 Navy burst opened up a 22-15 edge before clinching the set.
  • Three straight points starting with a freshman Lily Torrence ace doubled up the Midshipmen 6-3 early in the second set. Lane and sophomore Maeve Bailey skied up for the dual block keeping the lead three, 10-7. Holy Cross held a 15-12 lead at the media timeout. After the stoppage, Holy Cross notched two straight to increase their margin 17-12. Navy tied the set 17-17 on the strength of five consecutive points. Wold's seventh kill of the match put the Crusaders on the brink of a second set victory 24-22. Navy closed the set on a 6-2 burst for the 28-26 win.
  • Wold and Bailey used a block at the net to trail 4-3 in the third set. Senior Rian Millership and Godier also came together at the net for a stuff and on the next serve, Godier placed an ace for the 10-9 one score deficit. Five in a row from Navy built up 15-9 advantage. In front by seven, Holy Cross kept at it thanks to a 5-1 run putting the team behind three, 20-17. A service miscue kept the Crusaders down three until Navy notched the final two points of the match.
INSIDE THE BOX:
  • Bailey hit .467 in the contest making it the fifth time in 2024 that she hit .400 on better in a match.
  • Sophomore libero Emma Halstead's 4.21 digs per set mark is tied for eighth all-time for a single-season in team history. She had 19 double-digit dig games.
  • Senior setter Sarah Stokes finished her career with 558 assists.
  • Senior right side Lauren Halverson completed her Crusader career with 194 total blocks. Millership wrapped up her career with 150 blocks.
