Men’s ice hockey splits series with Sacred Heart

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Holy Cross men's ice hockey team split its series with Sacred Heart, falling on Saturday night, 2-1, at Martire Family Arena.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The two teams played a quick and even first period, with Sacred Heart holding the slight advantage in shots, 17-14. Holy Cross killed off the lone power play opportunity that was awarded in the period.
  • Junior Jack Stockfish opened the scoring at the 12:39 mark of the second period. Senior Matt Shatsky sent a stretch pass from the goal line to the opposite blue line, finding senior Liam McLinskey. McLinskey sent a pass across to junior Devin Phillips, who found Stockfish wide open in the slot. Stockfish then made a quick pull around the Pioneers' netminder, sliding the puck under his outstretched leg for the score.
  • Sacred Heart tied it up at 1-1 on the power play with 5:25 remaining in the middle frame.
  • Sacred Heart took the lead with 11:45 to play in regulation.
 
BEYOND THE NUMBERS:
  • Senior Thomas Gale recorded 15 saves in net.
  • Holy Cross tallied 16 blocked shots in the contest, with senior Matt Shatsky recording a team-high three.
  • Stockfish won a game-high 11 faceoffs.
 
UP NEXT:
  • Holy Cross will return home for two non-conference matchups next weekend, welcoming Hockey East's UMass Lowell to the Hart Center on Friday, Nov. 1, and the ECAC's no. 8/8 Quinnipiac on Saturday, Nov. 2. Both games are scheduled for 7 p.m.
