WORCESTER, Mass. — The Holy Cross men's ice hockey team fell in overtime to Merrimack, 4-3, in non-conference action on Tuesday, Jan. 2 at the Hart Center Rink.
The Crusaders (9-9-3) rallied from a 3-1 third-period deficit, scoring two goals in the span of 55 seconds, but the Warriors (9-9-1) needed just 37 seconds in overtime to come away with the victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Holy Cross struck early, with sophomore center Joe Solimine going top shelf for the opening tally at 2:47 of the first.
- That lead held until 7:35 of the second period, when Matt Copponi scored for Merrimack to knot the score. Just under five minutes later, Mark Gallant gave the Warriors a 2-1 advantage.
- Merrimack's lead grew to 3-1 with a power-play tally from Ben Brar at the 6:03 mark of the third.
- Sophomore left wing Jack Seymour scored at 7:35 to make it a 3-2 contest, and just 55 seconds later, senior center Jack Ricketts scored the equalizer with 11-and-a-half minutes to go in regulation.
- The score remained deadlocked, forcing overtime, but Alex Jeffries scored just 37 seconds into the extra frame to secure the victory for the Warriors.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
- Solimine's goal was his first of the season.
- Seymour recorded his first career multi-point game with a goal and an assist.
- Ricketts equaled his career high with eight shots on goal tonight and won a game-high 11 faceoffs.
- Senior Matt Guerra's assist on Holy Cross' final goal tonight marked his 60th career point. Guerra is one of 12 active Atlantic Hockey skaters to have reached that milestone.
UP NEXT:
- Holy Cross returns to Atlantic Hockey action with a home-and-home series against American International College.
- The series will open with a game in Springfield, Mass. at 1 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 5.
- The Crusaders will then host AIC at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 6. Tickets are available through the Holy Cross Ticket Office.
- Saturday's game will also be First Responders Night — All first responders can request a complimentary ticket ahead of the game.
