Field hockey falls short against Long Island

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. - The Holy Cross field hockey team fell short against Long Island, 3-2, on Sunday morning at the Field Hockey Complex at Wagner College.

Senior Allie McDonough opened the scoring midway through the first quarter to give the Crusaders (2-3) the lead. Holy Cross would hold on to the lead until just before halftime, when the Sharks (1-5) struck for two goals in two minutes.

After a shot by freshman Maguire Sturgis, the Crusaders were awarded a penalty stroke opportunity. Senior Haley Davis picked up her first goal of the season on the stroke to tie the game at two apiece, just under five minutes into the third quarter. After two yellow cards were assessed to Holy Cross in the fourth quarter, Long Island took advantage of the two-player advantage, scoring the deciding goal with 5:31 remaining in the matchup.

Senior Brooke Ross recorded five saves in the loss, while Long Island's Fleur Hofman recorded seven in the win.

The Crusaders will open Patriot League play on Saturday, Sept. 16 when they host Turnpike Trophy foe Boston University at 4 p.m.
