Lane named to All-Tournament Team, volleyball drops Saturday decision to Kansas City

BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Holy Cross volleyball team concluded their season opening swing at the FAU Invitational falling to Kansas City 3-0 Saturday morning at the Baldwin Arena.

The setback sends the Crusaders to 1-2 on the young season while the Roos remain unblemished at 3-0.

Junior Abbie Lane was the Crusader representative on the FAU All-Tournament Team. Lane paced Holy Cross with 30 kills (3.00 k/s) and was second in digs (23) to go with three total blocks, three assists and two aces over the three matches.

  • Roos 3, Crusaders 0 (11-25, 12-25, 18-25)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Crusaders built an early 4-0 lead in the opening set getting a dual block by junior Lauren Halverson and sophomore Gracie Reisman combined with a sophomore Rachel Johnson ace and Halverson kill. Five straight points by the Roos put them ahead for the first time at 6-5. Their burst expanded to 11-2 as they led 11-6 leading to a Holy Cross timeout. Their run increased to 13-2 as they were ahead 13-6, however, Lane halted the outburst with a kill to make it 13-7. Six in a row by Kansas City pushed them ahead 19-7 before winning the set 25-11.
  • Kansas City came out firing to build an early 6-0 lead as Holy Cross stopped play with a timeout. Lane notched the first point for the Crusaders to make it 6-1. KC eventually moved in front 18-5 midway through the set as they took a 2-0 match lead with a 25-12 win.
  • Holy Cross trailed 4-2 after Halverson converted a kill. Lane produced a kill and two aces to drop the HC deficit to 8-7 forcing the Roos into a timeout. The Crusaders remained down by one, 15-14 as junior Rian Millership converted a kill. Five consecutive by Kansas City increased their edge to 20-14.
INSIDE THE BOX:
  • Lane and Halverson paced the match with a game-high eight kills each.
  • Five Crusaders had five or more digs.
  • Kansas City outblocked the Crusaders 9-to-2.
UP NEXT:
  • The Crusaders will be back on the court next Friday, Sept. 1 at the Harvard Invitational to take on New Hampshire at 4 p.m.
