WORCESTER, Mass. - The Holy Cross field hockey team outlasted Stonehill College in double overtime, 1-0, to earn a win in their season opening game on Friday afternoon at the Hart Turf Field.
The Skyhawks (0-1) came out strong in the first half, outshooting the Crusaders (1-0) 6-2, while drawing three corners. The two teams played even in the second half, picking up four shots and four corners each.
The first overtime period saw Holy Cross in the drivers seat as the Crusaders did not allow a Skyhawks shot, while picking up five of their own. Neither team was able to draw the corner as the game progressed to a second overtime period.
Stonehill opened the second overtime by drawing a stroke opportunity just 1:02 into the frame. Senior goalkeeper
Brooke Ross lined up against Stonehill's Julieta D'Antonio with the game on the line. Ross read D'Antonio's movement, diving to her right to meet the lifted shot before it got to the goal, giving her team another chance to take the game. The Crusaders marched the ball down to the other end, drawing three corners in a row. On the the third corner, sophomore
Megan Schienbein sent the insert to senior
Allie McDonough's stick stop set up at the top of the circle. McDonough bumped the ball to her left, where senior
Katie Guden sent a short stick shot through the legs of Stonehill's goalkeeper, Shannon Conte, to end the game with 6:58 remaining.
Ross finished the afternoon with 11 saves to earn the shutout, while Conte had nine saves and one goal allowed. Freshman
Maguire Sturgis led the offensive with four shots, all of which were on goal.
The Crusaders return to action on Friday, September 1 when they travel to Dedham, Mass. to face Northeastern University at 6 p.m.
