WORCESTER, Mass. – The Holy Cross women's soccer team fell in a close 3-1 home opener loss to Northeastern on Sunday, Aug. 20.

Senior forward Cerys Balmer netted the first goal of the season on a penalty kick with about 10 minutes left in the match. Balmer was taken down in the box and took advantage of the opportunity to bring the Crusaders within one late in the game.

Northeastern scored two of its goals in the middle of the first half off of corner kicks and tallied one more late in the second half for the 3-1 win. Both first half goals were scored by the Huskies Avery Lavangie.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

• In the first half, Northeastern scored both goals off corners within five minutes of each other.

• In the second half, the Crusaders minimized the Huskies lead on a penalty kick goal.

• Northeastern solidified their lead with a goal in the last few minutes of play at the 86:39 minute mark for the 3-1 result

• The Huskies out-shot the Crusaders 13-10 and led Holy Cross 5-3 in corners.

INSIDE THE BOX:

• Balmer scored the teams first goal of the season on a penalty kick at the 80:02 mark.

• Balmer was 1-for-2 in shot attempts on the day.
