PISCATAWAY, N.J. – The Holy Cross women's soccer team was downed by Rutgers in its season opener in a 2-0 loss on Thursday, Aug. 17.
Despite a strong performance from transfer goalkeeper Julia Walsh in her Division I debut, the Scarlet Knights were relentless on attack during the entirety of the match.
Rutgers scored both of its goals early on in the first half of the game. The Crusaders regained control with physical defense in the second half to keep the Scarlet Knights from furthering their lead.
"Opening up against a Big 10 opponent of the caliber of Rutgers was always going to be a big test, but I thought the girls acquitted themselves exceptionally well. They can only get better playing teams like this underneath the lights in front of a big crowd," said head coach Ben Graham. "They worked hard and competed for the whole game and it gives us a great building block to work off for the rest of the year."
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- In the first half, Rutgers scored one goal off a blocked free kick and one off a penalty kick within the first 14 minutes.
- Rutgers out-shot Holy Cross 22-2 and led the Crusaders 9-3 in corners.
INSIDE THE BOX:
- Goalkeeper Julia Walsh recorded eight saves on the night, three in the first half and five in the second.
