Senior Liam Anderson of the Holy Cross football team and Obiamaka Igwenagu of the Holy Cross women's track and field team have been named the winners of the 2022-23 John A. Meegan Athletic Achievement Award.
The Meegan Award is presented to a student-athlete, regardless of class, who attained outstanding achievement during his or her college career. This award is given by the club in memory of the late John A. Meegan (Class of 1939), loyal follower of all Crusader sports and esteemed treasurer of the Varsity Club from 1988 to 1996.
A team captain and Stats Perform All-America honoree in 2022, Anderson led the Holy Cross defense with a team-leading 86 tackles on the season, with 58 solo tackles. He tallied 14.5 tackles for a loss of 57 yards, including three sacks for a loss of 28 yards. Anderson helped lift Holy Cross to a historic 2022 season, in which the Crusaders secured their fourth consecutive Patriot League championship, won a program-record 12 games and finished with a 12-1 record and had a perfect (11-0) regular season for the first time since 1991.
In his Holy Cross career, Anderson played in all 54 contests over the last five seasons, and recorded 232 total career tackles. Anderson is a two-time All-Patriot League first team and Academic All-Patriot League selection, and he earned an All-ECAC nod in 2021.
Igwenagu owns the Holy Cross records for both the indoor (12.57m) and outdoor (12.59m) triple jump, breaking her own record multiple times over the course of her career. This season, she took home gold medalist honors for the triple jump at both the New England Indoor Championship and the Patriot League Outdoor Championship, earning All-Patriot League first team honors after setting a conference outdoor championship meet record. She additionally was a bronze medalist in the triple jump at the 2023 Patriot League Indoor Championship.
In 2023, Igwenagu had the top indoor and outdoor marks for the triple jump of all student-athletes in the Patriot League.
