Softball defeated by Bucknell on Monday

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Holy Cross softball team was swept in the season series by Bucknell falling 3-0 Monday afternoon on Freshman Field in Patriot League action.

The setback sends the Crusaders to 14-32-1, 2-13 PL while the Bison improve to 13-26, 5-10 PL.

Senior second baseman Kari Jacobson tallied two of the three hits for the Crusaders in a 2-for-3 effort. Jacobson has hits in four straight contests and in 14 of the last 17 games for Holy Cross raising her batting average from .230 to .295 in the process.
 
STARTING IN THE CIRCLE:
  • Madison Roukey: W, (6-5), complete game, shutout, three hits allowed, three walks, 10 strikeouts.
  • Freshman Sophia Roncone: L, (6-17), 4.1 innings pitched, four hits allowed, earned run, four walks, strikeout.
IN RELIEF:
  • Senior Audrey Gusel: 2.2 innings pitched, four hits allowed, earned run.
STEPPING TO THE PLATE:
  • Haley Speicher: 3-for-4, triple, two runs scored.
  • Chase Knapp: 2-for-4, stolen base, RBI.
  • MaKenzie Hilling: 1-for-2, RBI, walk.
  • Kari Jacobson: 2-for-3, triple.
  • Sophomore Emma Fong: 1-for-2.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Crusaders notched their first hit in the bottom of the third as Jacobson tripled down the left field line with two outs. Roukey struck out the next batter to end the scoring threat.
  • Bucknell took the lead in the top of the fourth as Speicher tripled into the right center field gap and crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly. A fielding error extended the inning and the guests notched another run to lead 2-0.
  • An important insurance tally in the top of the seventh expanded the edge to 3-0.
  • With two outs in the bottom of the seventh, Holy Cross rallied when Fong ripped a single through the left side. Senior Baily Bates worked a full count walk to extend the game. Roukey completed the shutout by inducing a fly out to center to end the contest.
DUE UP:
  • The Crusaders continue their homestand on Tuesday, April 25 at 4:30 p.m. with a Cousy Cup game against nonconference opponent Dartmouth.
