The Holy Cross women's ice hockey team has presented its team awards for the 2022-23 season.
Winners and descriptions of awards are as follows:
Most Valuable Player: Mary Edmonds
Edmonds tallied the programs highest single-season point total in Hockey East play with 18, from ten goals and eight assists. During her senior season, she set the program record for faceoff wins, with 1,644. She collected team-highs in game-winning goals (2) and power play goals (3).
Most Improved Player: Taylor Cantelon
The MIP is awarded to the player who has improved the most either from last year to this year or over the course of this season. Cantelon's positive attitude propelled her through the season. Always going the extra mile, her commitment to grow as a defender didn't go unnoticed by her teammates and coaches.
Unsung Hero: Madison Beck, Lily Cataldo and Carly Beniek
The Unsung Hero is someone who helps the team achieve success in ways that might not be measurable on the scoresheet. Beck started the majority of season in net for the Crusaders, posting a .919 save percentage and tallied 716 saves. Beck was a crucial factor in multiple historic wins during the 2022-23 season, including the victories over two ranked Hockey East opponents and the Frozen Fenway triumph.
Cataldo stepped up in big situations for the Crusaders when needed. She holds an unbelievable work ethic and is an even better teammate. Cataldo's caring and compassionate attitude has made her a cornerstone of the locker room.
Beniek posted two goals in key moments against ranked Hockey East opponents this season. She scored the game-winning goal against No. 14 Vermont and started the scoring against No. 15 Connecticut. Beniek assumed a leadership role as her dedication and passion showed through on and off the ice.
Crusader Award: Lily Cataldo
The Crusader Award is given to the student-athlete who best embodies the team's core values: be a great teammate, bring energy, be reliable, and be relentless. Cataldo, who appeared in nine games this season, led the forwards group with her work ethic and the positive energy she brought to the team.
Strength and Conditioning Award: Michela Lio
This award winner is selected by Head Strength and Conditioning Coach
Jeff Oliver. It is awarded to someone who "brings it in the weight room each and every lift and never gives up." Lio pushed herself and her teammates in the weight room, and her hard work off ice transformed her on-ice performance this past season.
Academic Award: Lilly Feeney and Mary Edmonds
This award is given to the student-athlete with the highest combined GPA from the spring and fall semesters. Feeney recorded a GPA of 3.97 during the two semesters. Edmonds posted a 3.92, collecting this award for the third consecutive year.
