HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • A bases-clearing triple gave Rhode Island a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second, and a single through the left side tacked on another run.
  • The Rams extended their lead to 6-0 after a sac fly and a RBI double in the fourth inning. They then tacked on two more runs in the fifth with back-to-back RBI singles.
  • Holy Cross got on the board in the top of the sixth. Sophomore center fielder Connor Cooney singled to lead off the frame, and freshman second baseman Oliver Brown drew a walk. Junior catcher Patrick Casserly then singled through the right side to bring the Crusaders within 8-2.
  • Rhode Island immediately responded with two more runs in the bottom of the sixth, driving in runs with a triple and a sac fly to make it 10-2.
  • The Crusaders loaded up the bases in the top of the eighth, and freshman right fielder Jack Toomey drew a walk to push in a run and make it 10-3. Cooney then drove in two more runs with a single. After Cooney stole second base, Toomey was able to score on a throwing error by the Rhode Island catcher to bring the Crusaders within 10-6.
  • The Rams hit a two-out solo homer in the bottom of the eighth.
  • Sophomore Connor Peek hit a single to lead off the ninth, and came around to score after a pair of groundouts and an error by the shortstop, bringing Holy Cross within 11-7.
