HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Charleston Southern (5-8) took an early 1-0 lead with an RBI groundout in the first inning.
  • The Buccaneers had a pair of runners on and nearly added to their lead, but were robbed at the wall by a leaping sophomore left fielder Connor Cooney to end the second inning.
  • Holy Cross (4-9) scraped across a run in the top of the third, after sophomore third baseman Connor Peek scored while Cooney was caught in a rundown, to even the score at 1-1.
  • Charleston Southern strung together a series of singles in the fourth to score a pair of runs and take a 3-1 lead.
  • Freshman right fielder Jack Toomey hit a solo homer in the fifth inning to bring the Crusaders within 3-2.
  • The Buccaneers had two runners on with just one out in the bottom of the fifth, but senior relief pitcher Jake McOsker worked out of trouble and kept Holy Cross within a run.
  • Charleston Southern hit a solo homer in the bottom of the sixth for an insurance run, and then tacked on five more runs in the bottom of the seventh to build a 9-2 lead.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
  • Toomey's home run was his third of the season in just 11 games; during the 2022 season, three home runs were the most by any Crusader throughout the entirety of the season.
DUE UP:
  • Holy Cross begins a three-game series at The Citadel with a 4 p.m. game on Friday, March 10.
