PROVIDENCE, R.I. — The Holy Cross men's lacrosse team fell, 12-9, to Providence College on Sunday, Feb. 5 at Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium.
Senior attackman
Thomas McIntire led the way for the Crusaders (0-1, 0-0 PL) with four goals, followed closely by junior
Matt Major, who netted three of his own. Junior netminder
Dawson Friers recorded 10 saves on the day.
Providence (1-0, 0-0 Big East) was led by Matt Chabra, who scored four goals, and Ryan Bell, who posted two goals and an assist. Goaltender James Corasaniti made 14 saves in the contest.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Providence opened the game with a 3-0 scoring run.
- McIntire scored back-to-back goals over 48 seconds to cut the Friars lead to 3-2.
- Providence scored one more goal before the end of the first quarter, and another to open the second quarter.
- Senior midfielder Cameron Magalotti picked up his first goal of the season at the 4:14 mark of the second quarter to bring the score to 5-3. Spinning around a defender, Magalotti's shot was too quick for Corasaniti.
- Providence scored two goals before the end of the quarter to take a 7-3 lead into halftime.
- The Crusaders outscored the Friars 3-2 in the third quarter to slim the Providence lead to 9-6. Sophomore midfielder Baker Reding scored the opening goal of the quarter, followed by two by the Friars.
- McIntire picked up his third goal of the game, assisted by senior defenseman Hayes Reding. Major rounded out the quarter with an up-goal, assisted by junior attackman Cole Kratovil.
- Major opened the final quarter of play with another up-goal, assisted this time by senior midfielder T.J. Lynch.
- After a goal by Providence, Major completed his hat trick effort with an even strength goal, assisted by junior defenseman Peter Roegge.
- McIntire turned on the jets for his fourth goal of the game, turning the corner and firing a shot past Corasaniti to cut the Providence lead to 10-9.
- The Friars scored two goals in the final 2:30 of the game to secure the win.
BEYOND THE BOX:
- Providence held the slight edge in shots, 40-35.
- Holy Cross held the edge in faceoffs, 15-9.
- Freshman Michael Rincon led the team in caused turnovers with two, while adding three ground ball pickups.
UP NEXT:
- Holy Cross continues their road trip on Wednesday, Feb. 8, when they face Merrimack in North Andover, Mass.
- Game time is set for 4 p.m. at Duane Stadium. The game will stream on ESPN+.
