Women’s basketball picks up 20th win at Army

WEST POINT, N.Y. -  The Holy Cross women's basketball team had four players reach double figures as they earned a 60-54 victory Saturday afternoon against Patriot League opponent Army West Point in Christl Arena.

The Crusaders (20-8, 12-5 PL) recorded back-to-back 20 win seasons for the first time since the 2001-02 and 2002-03 seasons. It is the 23rd 20 victory campaign in program history and the second under head coach Maureen Magarity.

Freshman Kaitlyn Flanagan matched a career-high with 14 points, four rebounds, an assist and a steal. Junior Bronagh Power-Cassidy scored 13 points, 10 coming in the first half. Sophomore forward Lindsay Berger chipped in 12 points, seven rebounds, four assists and a block. Junior Cara McCormack had 10 points, a career-high matching four steals and three dimes.

For Army (12-15, 10-7 PL) Kamryn Hall scored a game-high 20 points on 6-of-12 shooting (50%) with seven rebounds, three assists and two blocks before fouling out. The Crusader defensive unit held down Sabria Hunter who scored only three points, one at the free throw line and a bucket with under 20 seconds left.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Army scored the opening six points of the contest to lead by two possessions early. Power-Cassidy found Flanagan in the corner for a trey and the first Crusader points. Flanagan canned another three from the right wing to tie the contest 8-8. Holy Cross took their first lead at 13-12 as freshman Simone Foreman knocked down a three.
  • In the second, Holy Cross led 19-14 when Berger drove on the left side for an easy bucket. Hope Brown drilled a three to pull Army within two, 19-17. Army jumped back ahead 20-19 as Trinity Hardy knocked down a triple. Holy Cross closed the half on a 12-2 run to take a 31-22 halftime lead.
  • The Black Knights began the third quarter on a 15-4 burst to take the lead 37-35 with 4:19 left in the period. The Crusaders held the hosts scoreless over the final 4:19 and produced nine straight points including a Flanagan hoop and harm to lead 44-37 through three stanzas.
  • The Crusader binge reached 11-0 when Berger glided through the lane for two to make it 46-37. Army pulled within four, 50-46 via a Lauren Lithgow triple with 6:41 left. Ahead by four with under a minute left, Berger came up with a huge block of Hunter on the block. Army took a timeout and drew up a play, but the shot was off the mark and Foreman grabbed the rebound.
OUTSIDE THE BOX:
  • Foreman converted her second three-pointer (2-of-9) of the season in the first quarter.
  • McCormack matched a career-high with four steals.
  • This week Holy Cross held the two players in the Patriot League who average double-doubles, Lex Therien (7 points, 13 rebounds, 2-of-10 FG, three turnovers) and Sabria Hunter (3 points, 14 rebounds, 1-of-7 FG, four turnovers) to 5.0 points, 13.5 rebounds and 3.5 turnovers per game on 17.6% (3-of-17) shooting.
