Men’s basketball downed by Loyola

BALTIMORE, Md. – Junior guard Joe Octave totaled 19 points, seven rebounds and three steals, but the Holy Cross men's basketball team was defeated by Loyola (Md.) 90-68 at Reitz Arena. The Crusaders fall to 10-20 overall and 7-10 in the Patriot League, while the Greyhounds improve to 11-19 on the year and 6-11 in the conference.

Holy Cross made just 41.3 percent of its field goal attempts and 46.2 percent of its free throws on the night, while committing 16 turnovers. Loyola was able to knock down 48.6 percent of its shots from the floor, 44.8 percent of its attempts from three-point range and 90.0 percent of its shots at the charity stripe, in addition to posting a 43-34 rebounding advantage.

The game was close early on, with the Greyhounds holding an 18-17 lead after the first six minutes of play. Loyola then scored 13 straight points to go up by 14 (31-17), and was later up 45-32 with four minutes left before the break. The Crusaders came back with a 7-2 spurt to trim the margin to single digits, before the Greyhounds closed out the half with an 8-0 run to take a 55-39 advantage into the locker room.

Loyola started the second half with a 16-3 run, extending its lead to 29 points. The Greyhounds would lead by at least 20 points the rest of the way, eventually posting a 22-point victory.

Freshman guard Will Batchelder finished the game with 13 points and three assists, while junior guard Nolan Dorsey added 12 points and senior forward Gerrale Gates scored 10 points. Loyola was led by Deon Perry with 27 points.

Holy Cross will return to action on Saturday, Feb. 25, when it plays host to Army West Point at 2:00 p.m.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
• Batchelder made three three-point field goals on the night, giving him 85 made three-pointers on the year to set a new Holy Cross single-season record. He broke the mark of Kevin Hamilton who hit 82 three-pointers in 2004-2005.
