The Holy Cross men's basketball team returns home this Wednesday, Feb. 15, to face Boston University at 7:00 p.m. The contest between the Crusaders and the Terriers will be shown live by the Patriot League on ESPN+.
The first 200 fans in attendance at Wednesday night's game will receive a free pair of exclusive Holy Cross sunglasses. The Crusaders will also be honoring their Patriot League champion football team, with fans having the opportunity to meet head coach Bob Chesney and have their picture taken with the Patriot League championship trophy in the lobby from 6:30-7:00 p.m.
Holy Cross currently has a mark of 6-8 in the Patriot League and an overall record of 9-18. The Crusaders are currently in seventh place in the conference, but stand just two games out of third place with four games remaining in the regular season. Holy Cross leads the Patriot League in three-point field goal percentage defense (32.2 percent), while standing third in three-point field goal percentage (36.9 percent) and fourth in blocked shots (2.9 blocks per game) and turnover margin (+0.2 turnovers per game).
Senior forward
Gerrale Gates has led the team by averaging 16.5 points, 8.9 rebounds, 2.7 assists, 1.8 steals and 1.2 blocked shots per game, in addition to hitting 48.3 percent of his field goal attempts. Freshman guard
Will Batchelder has added 12.6 points, 2.0 rebounds and 1.9 assists per contest, while junior guard
Joe Octave is putting up 11.4 points and 4.3 rebounds per game.
Boston University currently stands 12-15 overall and 5-9 in the Patriot League. The Terriers had won two straight games before falling at Lafayette 69-65 in overtime on Saturday. Senior guard Walter Whyte has led the team by averaging 14.6 points and 5.8 rebounds per game, while hitting 82.4 percent of his foul shots. Senior guard Jonas Harper has averaged 10.1 points and 1.7 rebounds per contest, and senior guard Ethan Brittain-Watts has chipped in with 8.8 points and 2.0 assists per game..
Following the contest with Boston University, the Crusaders will travel to Colgate for a 2:00 p.m. game on Saturday, Feb. 18.
CRUSADERS HOLD EQUALITY & INCLUSION NIGHT
During the game against Boston University, Holy Cross will be holding Equality & Inclusion Night. Members of the Crusader coaching staff will be wearing all black to represent unity and an equal sign lapel pin to symbolize equality. This nationwide campaign presented by the Rising Coaches Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Alliance serves as a reminder that sports can be used as a platform to highlight important societal issues both in our communities and nationwide.
THE TURNPIKE TROPHY
Throughout the 2022-2023 academic year, Holy Cross and Boston University will be competing for the Turnpike Trophy. This athletic series between the in-state Patriot League rivals awards points for all head-to-head victories in both the regular season and postseason, with the Turnpike Trophy going to the school which accumulates the most points at the end of the year. Entering this week, the Terriers hold a 5-4 lead in the competition. In addition to the men's basketball game, the schools will also meet in women's basketball on Feb. 15.
